Modern Family is one of the longest-running and most celebrated comedies from the US in recent years. The hugely popular ensemble comedy perfectly captures the quirks and family issues of the modern family, and it never fails to make us laugh our socks off on a weekly basis. At the end of the show’s fifth season Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cam (Eric Stonestreet) tied the knot overcoming quite a few hurdles to get their happy ending. The sixth season of the show picks up with the lovebirds struggling to draw an end to their honeymoon with Cam trying to keep the romance alive.
Modern Family: The Complete Sixth Season features all 24 episodes from the show’s latest season and serves up plenty more laughs. As well as the on-going changing dynamics within the Pritchett and Dunphy families, Phil (Ty Burrell) and Claire (Julie Bowen) have to deal with wayward new neighbours, Haley’s (Sarah Hyland) continued lack of life direction, and Alex’s (Ariel Winter) claims to have a boyfriend, which they don’t believe.
One of the most innovative episodes of the season is Connection Lost. Claire is stuck in the airport and the whole episode utilises Apple products so that the family can communicate. Claire uses Facetime through her laptop to speak to the family and despite feeling a little gimmicky to begin with it works really well. It’s yet another example of how Modern Family tries to do things outside of the norm and it’s never scared to experiment with its format.
Adam DeVine gets a slightly bigger role this season as his path crosses with that of Haley’s. DeVine plays Andy who is Jay (Ed O’Neill) and Gloria’s (Sofia Vergara) babysitter, and he develops a soft spot for Haley over the course of the season. Are his feelings reciprocated? You’ll have to watch the season to find out.
One of the things that has always made Modern Family so special is the chemistry between its ensemble cast. Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Ed O’Neill and Sofia Vergara continue to lead the way for the younger cast but it’s Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who play’s Cam and Mitch’s adopted daughter Lily, that emerges as the real scene stealer. She’s really growing into a gifted comedic performer and she brightens up every scene she’s in.
Special features on the release include a variety of behind-the-scenes featurettes, a gag reel and a selection of deleted scenes. There’s also a featurette exploring the ground-breaking episode Connection Lost.
Modern Family: The Complete Sixth Season maintains the high quality that the show has always delivered. It’s a laugh a minute with plenty of laugh-out-loud moments as well as some truly heartwarming ones. Despite their issues, we can’t help but feel jealous of the Dunphy and Pritchett families. Roll on season seven and long may Modern Family stay on our screens!
