Modern Family: The Complete Fifth Season DVD review

Modern Family picked up its fifth Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series earlier this year and it’s no surprise as it’s the finest American comedy on TV hands down. The show’s fifth season continued to draw big ratings in the US and served up plenty of laughs. Modern Family also passed two milestones during its fifth season; passing its 100th episode and featuring the same-sex wedding of two main characters.

Modern Family: The Complete Fifth Season proves that the comedy series still delivers every episode at a standard that is way higher than any other comedy series out there. The latest season consists, as usual, of mostly standalone episodes but there is the story arc of Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) getting married following the proposal that takes place in season opener Suddenly, Last Summer.

As always with Modern Family the season is packed with lots of different storylines giving all of the characters a chance to shine. The Late Show is an early highlight as Jay (Ed O’Neill) tries to organise a family outing but the entire family end up being late for various reasons. A Fair To Remember sees Gloria’s (Sofia Vergara) new male nanny Andy (Adam DeVine) begin his love/hate relationship with Haley (Sarah Hyland), and Sleeper sees Phil (Ty Burrell) tell one of his legendary lies in order to stop Claire (Julie Bowen) finding out that he didn’t stay home for the repairman.

For the show’s annual vacation episode the Dunphys and the Pritchetts head to Australia and Phil’s enthusiasm gets the better of him.

One of the best episodes of the season is Las Vegas where the adults go on holiday leaving the kids behind. The episode recently picked up an Emmy for Gail Mancuso’s fantastic direction and it’s an example of Modern Family at its absolute best. The episode is packed with innuendo, misunderstandings and farce and it’s quite possibly the most we’ve ever laughed at anything in our lives.

The best thing about Modern Family is its incredible ensemble. Every single member of the cast adds something to the pot and we must confess that Sofia Vergara often steals the show as Gloria. All of the kids are great too with Sarah Hyland really standing out as Haley.

Extras on the release include a featurette about the Australia episode, deleted and alternate scenes, a featurette on the Vegas episode and a gag reel. There’s also behind-the-scenes footage with Jesse Tyler Ferguson and of Mitch and Cam’s wedding.

Modern Family is an absolute classic show and the fifth season is one of its strongest yet. The show returns soon for a sixth season and we predict many more years ahead. No show on TV makes us laugh like Modern Family and dare we say it’s out favourite comedy series since Friends.
