Bones is about to kick off itās milestone tenth season but fans can brush up on season nine (or rewatch it) before then with the release of Bones: The Complete Ninth Season on DVD. At the end of season 8 Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) tried to finally take down serial killer Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds) and failed. Instead he managed to manipulate them once again warning Booth that if he didnāt end his engagement to Brennan he would kill five innocent people.
Season 9 of Bones picks up in the aftermath of Booth breaking off his engagement and finds Brennan deeply upset and confused by his behaviour. Sheās not the only one with Angela (Michaela Conlin) taking her side and constantly questioning what Booth is doing. With Booth unable to tell Brennan the real reason he ended their engagement will they ever catch Pelant and walk down the aisle?
Long-time fans of Bones will know that the showrunners like to keep us guessing so expect plenty of spanners in the works before the Pelant storyline is resolved. Away from that main story arc, there are plenty of gruesome and mysterious new cases for Brennan and the Squints to sink their teeth into. These include the mystery of a body found hanging from climbing gear (The Lady on the List), a food scientist who is found ground up in stew served to school kids (The Mystery in the Meat) and a country singer who turns up dead in a garden (Big in the Philippines).
The Squinterns get plenty to do this season too with Wendell (Michael Grant Terry) making a shocking discovery about himself, Daisy (Carla Gallo) struggling to get along with rude intern Oliver (Brian Klugman), and Arastoo (Pej Vahdat) trying to comfort Cam (Tamara Taylor) when someone steals her identity and runs up a lot of debt on her credit cards.
Bones is one of those shows that succeeds because of its fantastic ensemble cast. Whilst Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz carry the more dramatic moments of the show, we like the balance of the humour that the supporting characters bring in. Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) continues to be TVās most loveable geek and John Francis Daley never fails to make us chuckle as Dr. Sweets.
Extras on the release include deleted scenes, a commentary on The Woman in White, a Comic-Con featurette, gag reel and a featurette.
Bones: The Complete Ninth Season is a rollercoaster ride and contains some of the most chilling episodes of the show yet. We do love it when the show is a little darker but thereās plenty of variety here to keep all fans happy. Booth and Brennan get a rocky ride but it feels like thereās more of an over-arching storyline than some of the showās previous seasons. Roll on season 10!
