Witches of East End: 10 reasons it shouldn’t have been cancelled

Witches of East End’s second (and final) season came to an end in the UK last night on Lifetime.

If you haven’t seen all of the second season and don’t want any spoilers we recommend you stop reading now. If you have seen it and want to know our thoughts then keep reading.

To say that the cancellation of Witches of East End was a blow to fans is a complete understatement. No real decent reason has been given for Lifetime pulling the plug on the show and fans have been left disappointed, especially given the lack of resolution for the cliffhangers in the season 2 finale.

As we write this article fans are campaigning to get Lifetime, or another network, to give the show a second chance and at last glance the petition had over 59,000 signatures (you can add yours by visiting http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/renew-witches-of-east-end)

As we come to terms with the very real possibility that Ingrid (Rachel Boston), Freya (Jenna Dewan Tatum), Joanna (Julia Ormond) and Wendy (Madchen Amick) are gone from our screens forever, we compile a list of 10 reasons why the show should never have been cancelled in the first place.

1. It’s incredibly addictive. Witches of East End has tight and involving storylines that always leave you counting down the days for the next episode. Very few shows manage to achieve that.

2. It has four strong female lead characters. Even in 2014 there are far more shows with strong male leads than there are strong female leads. Witches of East End features four strong women each with their own unique traits, powers and personalities. The characterisation is strong in the show and it’s one of the things we love so much about it.

3. It’s incredible main cast. Every single member of the main cast is fantastic. Julia Ormond brings gravitas to the show, Jenna Dewan Tatum and Rachel Boston bring wide-eyed innocence and youth, and Madchen Amick brings plenty of comedy flourishes and a feisty performance. The chemistry between the four is brilliant and forms the heart of the show.

4. Frederick (Christian Cooke) and Wendy’s fates. As the season two finale drew to a close Frederick lay seemingly dead on the floor and Wendy appeared to be in hell after giving her life for Tommy’s (Ignacio Serricchio). Seriously they’re going to leave us hanging on those two?

5. The Gardiner brothers. Another aspect of the show we loved was the ongoing war between Dash and Killian (Daniel Di Tomasso). At the end of season two Dash swapped bodies with Killian leaving his brother trapped in prison whilst he deceived Freya. We want to see Freya figure it out and the knock-on effect of getting back into bed with her former fiancé without realising she’d done it.

6. Ingrid’s pregnancy. If the show doesn’t come back we’ll never know how that pans out. Is Dash (Eric Winter) the father or is it the Mandragora? There’s so much scope for this storyline and we need answers!

7. The way it combined light and dark. Witches of East End was a rare show in terms of how it mixes drama, horror, suspense and comedy. The show could switch from one to the next within minutes and we loved how it always kept us on our toes.

8. Tarkoff’s (James Marsters) revenge. The evil old friend of Joanna’s was left stuck in the past after the time door closed before he had time to go through it. We fully expect that he’ll want revenge on the Beauchamps and we want to see how that’s going to unfold.

9. The guy candy. Seriously how are we going to cope without Eric Winter, Daniel Di Tomasso and Christian Cooke on our screens every week? Witches of East End has to have one of the sexiest casts on television, which is reason enough for it to come back 😉

10. The fantastic guest stars. It takes a well-respected show to land great talent and Witches of East End had them in droves. Virginia Madsen, Freddie Prinze Jr, Steven Berkoff, Rachel Nicols, Michelle Hurd, Ignacio Serricchio… Need we go on?
