The X Factor: Bootcamp recap 1

The X Factor has moved on to Boot Camp and Nicole Scherzinger has finally taken her permanent place on the judging panel as they get ready to sort out the wheat from the chaff.  As the judges hold a party for the hopefuls in Liverpool, the judges talk tactics on how to whittle the numbers down in only 72 hours.  Ex-contestants turn up at the party to impart words of wisdom and give an impromptu performance.

As the judges review old footage they are already eliminating a third of the competition without putting them through the rigours of Boot Camp. As the rejected drowned their sorrows and the rest of the world with their tears the chosen few prepare for the next phase.

They are split into groups to try and out-sing each other and the showing off and bitchiness begins – and that’s just between the boys!

The morning after the first challenge the judges roll up to Boot Camp.  First up in the singoff Tasha Leigh, Amy Mottram and Maisie Berry – they were all a bit off the note – but Amy survived another day while Tasha and Maisie were sent home.  Leanne Robinson, Harriet Marsland, Mia Sylvester, Jade Ellis, Eli Cripps and Melanie McCabe also impressed and got through to the next round of bootcamp.

The first three boys up failed to impress with Moves Like Jagger.  Jahmene Douglas was particularly disappointing considering his first audition.  Gary Barlow told him that he was the best singer they had heard during the auditions and based on today they would send him home.  However the strength of his first audition gave him passage to the next round.

Up next were the bands – Triple J v GMD3.  GMD3 kicked off with some acrobatics while Triple J provided the harmonies.  Both bands managed to impress enough to come back for the next part.  Next, Voxe v From Above.  From Above made it through, Voxe – bye bye.  Times Red v Duke were amazing singing Crazy In Love and the judges were crazy in love with them too!

Lightbulb Thieves v MK1 had a rap-off that was ‘a fantastic battle’ but Lightbulb Thieves were asked to leave.

Lucy Spraggan (of Beer Fear fame) was singing against Farah and Jessica Becket.  She looked very uncomfortable without her guitar.  Farah and Jessica were sent home and Lucy went through on the strength of her first audition.

A drunken Collagen Westwood along with Britt Love and Diedre Lawlor gave a poor performance.  However Britt was given another chance and Diedre and Collagen were sent packing.

A series of bands and individuals were sent home.  Word got around and Gary Barlow urged the remaining contestants to grasp the opportunity with both hands – the message however seemed to fall on deaf ears.

MITSOTU and Rough Copy managed to bring the goods to the table and deliver performances that got them through and a request from Barlow to perform to the other contestants to show them how it’s done.

Eli Prima and Fourth Avenue were below par.

Curtis Golden, James Arthur and James Vickery sang How To Save A Life.  They were saved and all three were through to return.

Next up were the precious threesome – Ottavio, Rylan and Gathan.  All three were amazing! They were pulling diva stunts and struts as though they were in a dragqueen-off-a-thon!  Nicole called it a diva hoe-down!  Ottavio and Gathan went through and after dragging Rylan through an emotional quagmire they put him out his misery and told him he was through too!  Diva Fever is back in a different guise!

Hayley Evetts and Nicola Marie sang Stronger but there were bits missing due to the third member pulling out last minute for personal reasons.  They were told to improvise and fill the blanks – both took full advantage and the second round of the audition was a marked improvement!  They were invited back to the next round.

Carolyn Poole headed the over agers campaign with an abundance of talent going through.  Last up was Robbie Hance, Jake Quickenden and Adam Burridge sang How To Save A Life.  Muttering ‘I’m going home’ halfway through his audition, Robbie was well aware that he’d squandered his chance and walked off the stage.  Adam and Jake were praised for carrying on and sent through to the next round.

With the sing-offs over and done with we now look forward to the next round of bootcamp – the challenge – to sing in front of an audience of 5,000 people!  Tune in for the next round of tears, tantrums, dashed hopes and some taking a step closer to their dreams.
