The Widow 1×06 The Spider and the Web preview

On the fifth episode of The Widow, Georgia (Kate Beckinsale) put herself in danger to get closer to the truth about Will (Matthew Le Nevez).

If you’re not up to date with The Widow and like to avoid spoilers we suggest you don’t read any further.

Georgia ended up shooting Pieter (Bart Fouche) in the leg to get him to start talking. He gave her a story about Will and some aid workers sheltering from a storm but she didn’t believe it. When Pieter alerted his men, Georgia fled into the jungle. She hid in an abandoned building but Pieter tracked her down. She ended up killing him and taking his wallet, keys and phone.

Georgia went back to the mine to steal Pieter’s truck and came across Adidja (Shalom Nyandiko). She picked her up and took her with her. She tried to get Adidja help but she refused and stayed with Georgia instead.

We learnt more about the mysterious General Azikiwe (Babs Olusanmokun) who gave the Green Lion bag with the laptop bomb to Gaëlle (Luiana Bonfim). We found out that Azikiwe was having hallucinations of women he’d killed including Gaëlle and another woman.

Much was also revealed about Judith (Alex Kingston) through flashbacks. We discovered that her mother died of cancer and that she left her a large sum of money. At the funeral, Judith met a woman called Siobhan (Siobhan Finneran) and the pair hit it off. They eventually became romantically involved and Judith agreed to stay in the UK to be with her, on the condition that she could use the money her mother left her to bail out Siobhan’s business.

After giving Siobhan the money, she disappeared and Judith discovered that she’d been tricked. Siobhan’s real name was Sally Newell. They spoke one last time when Sally told Judith she deserved the money more than her for actually looking after her mother until she died while Judith was in the Congo and only visited every 3 months.

The bad experience changed Judith and she went back to the UK and agreed to work with Azikiwe who she had previously ignored many times. She offered to illegally transport the precious metals from the mine across the border into Rwanda for him. He introduced her to Pieter Bellow and back in the present Georgia found evidence of their connection on Pieter’s phone.

Before Georgia could confront Judith to find out why she had lied to her, a man sent by Azikiwe attacked Judith in her home, stabbing her multiple times and leaving her for dead. She was found by her co-worker Joshua (Matthew Gravelle) who called an ambulance. Judith underwent surgery which she survived but later died from her injuries.

Elsewhere, Martin (Charles Dance) and Ariel (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) flew back to the DRC. They vowed to find those responsible for planting the bomb.

At the end of the episode, Azikiwe suggested that he also wanted Georgia dead.

The next episode is The Spider and the Web. Georgia and Adidja make a journey deep into the Congolese wilderness that yields unexpected consequences. Meanwhile, in the search for answers about the plane crash, Martin puts himself and Ariel ever closer to Azikiwe’s dangerous path.

The sixth episode of The Widow airs Tuesday 23rd April on ITV at 9pm. Preview it with our gallery:
