We already knew that The Grand Tour would be coming back for the fourth season and this was confirmed in a tearful farewell in the final episode of season 3.
As the boys signed off this season we saw a very teary-eyed Jeremy announcing that The Grand Tour as we know it was ending. Gone is the tent, the track and the live audience aspect of the show. The next season sounds like it will consist entirely of specials with the boys making road trips across various parts of the globe.
In an interview with The Sun Jeremy talks about why he was so upset at the end of the show
“In 2002 I came up with the Stig, then an audience with a track and all that stuff. So, you know, you do something for 17 years and then it goes,”
“The truth of it is, I think, I never got the chance to say goodbye to Top Gear. One minute I was there and one minute I wasn’t. It was like, did the show and then never did another one.”
“Never said goodbye. Never got a gold watch. Never got a retirement speech. Nothing. So this was almost as though we were saying goodbye to Top Gear as well. That’s why it was so emotional for me.”
I’m actually pleased that the next series will focus on specials. I’ve never been a massive fan of the links between films that often felt a bit forced. The magic of The Grand Tour, for me at least, was always in the specials where we got to see the trio doing stuff we mortals can only dream of. More than that though, I felt in the specials we got to see them acting naturally and for me, these moments are when The Grand Tour is truly is at its best.
