The Following season 2 finale – who will survive?

The Following ends its second season this week and the finale is sure to be even more tense than the end of the first season.

If you’re not up-to-date with The Following season 2 and do not like spoilers we recommend you stop reading now. If you have seen the latest episode then continue reading.

The final episode of the season, Forgive, will air in the US on Monday and the UK on Tuesday bringing to a close the latest chapter of Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon) and Joe Carroll’s (James Purefoy) battle. Ahead of the episode we’ve taken a look at the remaining main characters and made our predictions as to how likely they are to survive the season.

Keep reading to find out who we think will bite the dust in the season finale.

Ryan Hardy is pretty much 24’s Jack Bauer isn’t he? Having survived the entire first season which included a severe stabbing and a dodgy heart, season 2 has seen him run over and captured by Joe. If he dies there’s no show is there?

Chance of survival: 100%

Carrie Cooke

The ever-eager journalist played by Sprague Grayden is absolutely nowhere near the action for the season finale, unless there’s a twist we don’t know about yet. She’s served her purpose to Joe and with most of his followers dead we think she’s pretty safe.

Chance of survival: 100%

Max Hardy

Like Carrie, Max (Jessica Stroup) seems to be outside of the action. We’re sure she’ll manage to get herself in mortal danger but we’re not worried. She’s a tough cookie and after having survived the Huntsman and being beaten up by Gisele (Camille de Pazzis) we think she’ll be still standing when the credits roll.

Chance of survival: 90%

Joe Carroll

Now this is a tough one to call and it could be where we’re completely wrong. We don’t see an ending that exists where Joe and the psycho twins are still alive. Our gut tells us that Joe will somehow escape with his life again, after all he’s pretty central to the whole show. Having said that creator Kevin Williamson has said there may be a future free from Joe. As long as it’s not another ‘he’s dead, oh no he’s not’ moment leading into season 3 we’re happy for him to survive.

Chance of survival: 60%

Mike Weston

The fate of Mike (Shawn Ashmore) is hanging in the balance thanks to a gun to his head, a camera cutaway at the end of last episode Silence and a gunshot. We don’t want Mike to die but it would be a good twist. Mike, like Ryan, has survived some pretty brutal stuff so his time could be up. This one could go either way.

Chance of survival: 50%

Claire Matthews

Joe’s estranged wife Claire (Natalie Zea) has risen from the dead this season. Now in the company of the psycho twins her luck must be about to finally run out. She, like Ryan, survived a nasty stabbing at the end of season 1 and she’s killed off Joe’s second-in-command Emma Hill (Valorie Curry) this season. We think her work here is done.

Chance of survival: 40%

Preston Tanner

Having just seen his father slit his own throat Preston (Carter Jenkins) also has to contend with the fact he murdered someone. He’s the most disposable character of the bunch and his guilt could make him do something stupid.

Chance of survival: 30%

Mark and Luke

The psycho twins Mark and Luke (Sam Underwood) have had a good run. Luke’s already been pretty much beaten to death and lived to tell the tale. With Lily (Connie Nielsen) gone and all of their ‘family’ dead they don’t really have much else to live for do they? Ryan, Claire and Joe will team up to make sure these two don’t live to torture or kill anyone else.

Chance of survival: 20% (that’s 10% each)

The Following’s season 2 finale airs at 9/8c Monday on FOX in the US and 10pm Tuesday on Sky Atlantic HD in the UK. Watch the trailer for the episode below:
