The Strain: 10 things we want from season 2

The Strain finished its first season here in the UK last night and left things wide open for the second season, which is expected in 2015.

If you haven’t seen the first season finale of The Strain and don’t want any spoilers, we suggest you stop reading now. If you have seen it and want to hear our thoughts on season 2 then keep reading.

In the season one finale The Master escaped from Eph (Corey Stoll), Nora (Mia Maestro), Setrakian (David Bradley), Dutch (Ruta Gedmintas) and Fet (Kevin Durand), and showed them that although sunlight burns him it won’t actually kill him. Talk about a spanner in the works.

Elsewhere in the episode Gus (Miguel Gomez) was kidnapped by Mr Quinlan (Stephen McHattie), who explained that his group that The Ancients need a human to help them slay The Master. Gus agreed to help them and avenge the death of his family.

Whilst we’re quite a few months off the second season premiere, we’ve already started to think about what we want when the show returns.

Keep reading to find out the 10 things we want from The Strain’s second season…

1. A more concentrated storyline. The first season of The Strain showed a lot of promise but sometimes the plot strands felt a bit too wild and free with too many characters to concentrate on. We want the action to focus on the main characters we care about – Eph, Nora, Setrakian and Fet – rather than introducing lots of supporting characters.

2. More scares. Whilst season one of the show had its moments we didn’t really find it all that scary. Part of that was to do with some of the poor special effects and the reveal of The Master proved not to be as scary as it should have been. The Strain knows how to create atmosphere but it doesn’t always deliver the pay-off.

3. Gus to be integrated better in the storyline. The character skirted around the main characters in season one and came into contact with Zach (Ben Hyland) briefly but we want him to become part of the main group. If Gus and The Ancients join forces with Eph & co they would be a pretty formidable bunch wouldn’t they?

4. More answers. Setrakian’s backstory provided some of the origin for the Strigoi but we want more answers in season 2. We’re sure there is plenty more backstory to come but we want to start getting answers to some of the show’s burning questions. We also want to understand how far the infected now reaches or is it still only in New York?

5. Exploration of Eph and Nora’s relationship. From the first season it was obvious that the two characters had feelings for one another and had been floating in and out of a relationship. Eph’s estranged wife Kelly (Natalie Brown) was a spanner in the works but we want to see Eph and Nora grow closer in season two, especially as they don’t have much else left in the world other than each other.

6. Dutch to die. This could be controversial but we felt she was a bit conveniently thrown in their towards the second half of the season and the romantic sparks with Fet feel a little bit forced. She’s served her purpose now so we wouldn’t be too sad if Dutch bit the dust.

7. Eldritch Palmer (Jonathan Hyde) Eichhorst (Richard Sammel) to reveal their hand. Now that Palmer has been rejuvenated by The Master and is working with Eichhorst we want to know what the two are really up to. We’re fairly certain there’s something much more sinister going on and we can’t wait to find out what it is.

8. More Fet action. Hands up who loves Fet? The show really picked up when he arrived and with Fet always comes some badass action. We’re hoping for plenty more Fet and therefore plenty more action in season two.

9. A cure for Kelly. Ok this one is stretching it but when Zach saw Kelly had been turned in the season one finale our little hearts broke. We’d quite like a cure to be developed so that Zach can get his mother back. Is that too much to ask for? Probably!

10. A more epic landscape for season two. We get that season one was very much scene-setting but now we want to see the threat expand past New York. We want the threat to be more urgent, the action to be bigger and the locations to be more expansive.

The Strain is expected to return to Watch in the UK and FX in the US summer 2015.
