Sky 1 HD celebrates Great Little Britons

This summer, Sky 1 HD will be celebrating with some Great Little Britons.

The six one-off documentary series will be shining a light on some of the nation’s most dedicated perfectionists, be it profession or hobby.

Great Little Britons will examine those who strive for excellence in their chosen pursuit, as they compete to be winners in their field and lift trophies of victory.

Each documentary focuses on a different competition:

4July – Cake Competitions: The crème de la crème of determined, surprising and lovable cake decorators come together as they prepare for the highlight of the competitive cake decorating calendar, the annual Hotelympia Salon Culinaire Competition. From designer shoes made of sugar to animals iced to impress, these are no ordinary cakes. The competitors take their creations deadly seriously and battle it out to be crowned best in show and not be left collecting the crumbs.

11July 2013 – Show Ponies: Horse mad families regularly travel from the far flung corners of the country sacrificing sleep, money and family unity to do battle on the showing circuit. Armed with tweed, ribbons, and make-up, this feature shows how the equestrian industry is driven by a small army of exceptional mothers determined to secure their child’s success.

18JULY – The Good Funeral Awards: Undertakers have their moment in the spotlight asthe inaugural Good Funeral Guide Awards takes place in Bournemouth. From coffin designers to grave diggers, from funeral celebrants to embalmers, the camaraderie and black humour is palpable as Britain’s best gather to honour the funeral industry’s most skilled workers.

25July 2013 –Blown Away: More than sixty bands travel to Bradford for the annual Yorkshire Brass Band Championships and this film examines the obsession for four very different bands for whom performing but a way of life. Charting both the road to the competition as well as the final contest itself, tensions run high as the musicians know one wrong note could blow their chances.

1August – A Cut Above: It’s curling tongs at dawn as the fortunes of a dedicated group of extremely competitive hairdressers are documented when they descend on Bournemouth for the National Federation of Hairdressers Regional Bournemouth and Reading Competition. Stylists go head to head, locking hairdryers as they battle it out to be crowned a cut above the rest.

8 August 2013 – Cheerleaders: The Bradford Bulls Super League rugby team cheerleaders, The Bulletes, follow a tough training regime led by real life Sue Sylvester, Head Coach Robyn Morrison.For the first time the feisty squad of 11 are entering the UK National cheerleading championships, chasing the first prize trophy. But with just 8 weeks until the event of their lives, every girl is fighting to keep their place in the squad. Behind the obligatory big smiles and high-kicks, this one-off documentary will look at the girls who collectively carry the same dream – to be the best and win at all costs.

Great Little Britons will air exclusively on Sky 1 HD from the 4th of July.
