Alisonā€™s (Sasha Pieterse) return to school was the focal point on the 100th episode as the (reformed?) mean girl took her first steps back into the halls of Rosewood High with no idea what reception she would get. The episode opened with Hanna (Ashley Benson) sharing her concerns with Travis (Luke Kleintank) that the return of Ali will label her and her friends a puppets once again. Meanwhile Aria (Lucy Hale) continued to turn to Ezra (Ian Harding) for help dealing with her guilt of Shana (Aeriel Miranda) before bumping into Ali speaking to someone in a car and Jenna (Tammin Sursok) arriving back in Rosewood.

It wasnā€™t just Hanna who wasnā€™t feeling the love for Ali as Spencer (Troian Bellisario) confided in Toby (Keegan Allen) that she wants to believe that Ali has changed but sheā€™s struggling to. They were interrupted by a call to Toby from Jenna who informed him that Shana was dead. Is the girlsā€™ secret about to come out?

The next day Alisonā€™s arrival at Rosewood is met with varying reactions with most students stopping to gawp and stare at the former ā€˜deadā€™ girl. Aliā€™s arrival was soon interrupted when Spencer was called to the principalā€™s office and found her mum (Lesley Fera) waiting for her. Veronica quickly told Spencer she was pulling her out of school and they were moving out of the family home before Peter (Nolan North) returned. At the Hastings household Spencer desperately tried to get answers of her mother but all she got was that Peter and Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) lied about their whereabouts the night that Jessica (Andrea Parker) was murdered. Could they have really done the deed? Spencer quickly formed the theory that they did it to prevent Jessica framing Spencer for the murder of the girl buried in Aliā€™s grave.

Back at Rosewood High Aria decided she was going to pay Jenna a visit to pass her condolences over the death of Shana. Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Hanna thought it was a terrible idea but Aria went ahead anyway. Arriving at Jennaā€™s she found the door unlocked and discovered Jenna in tears on the floor of her bedroom. Without saying a word Aria turned and walked away.

Emily continued to try and build bridges with Paige (Lindsey Shaw) who was getting increasingly more upset about Aliā€™s return to Rosewood High. She arranged a meeting between Ali and Paige for the two girls to try and get past their differences but it didnā€™t really help either of them. With Paige having already left, Emily got ready to join her ex and Sydney (Chloe Bridges) at the movies but before she left the house Ali revealed that she did have genuine feelings for Emily and their kissing practice was more than that to her. Can anyone say love triangle?

Hanna got a bit of a surprise next when she bumped into Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) in the coffee shop. An awkward exchange followed and once Caleb saw Travis scrawled on one of Hannaā€™s coffee cups he swiftly left. Hanna tried to call Caleb once sheā€™d arrived at Lucasā€™ (Brendan Robinson) party but he didnā€™t answer. She then turned her attention to get drunk prompting Travis to take her home.

Speaking of awkward moments Aria had a pretty epic one when Jenna turned up on her doorstep and told her she knew it was she that had been in her house earlier. After a frank exchange Aria invited Jenna in for tea so the two could talk about Shanaā€™s death. Not a good idea Aria!!

With all of her friends busy, Ali took a walk to the Rosewood church. Upon leaving her house she was followed by someone in a car and after arriving at the church she was confronted by Mona (Janel Parrish). The two girls had a fierce exchange with Ali quickly slipping back into her mean girl ways. After theyā€™d slapped each other, Ali left and Mona was fuming.

Ali returned to the comfort of her friends and spun yet another lie claiming Mona hit her and she didnā€™t retaliate. Well that soon came back to bite her in the ass when it transpired Mona had filmed the exchange (and slightly edited it) and shared it with her growing army. Mona shared that news in the middle of the school with everyone watching making Aria, Hanna, Emily and Spencer doubt that Ali was telling them the truth once again.

Prior to that things got a bit steamy with two of the PLL couples. Emily and Ali enjoyed a bit of passionate kissing in Emilyā€™s bed whilst Aria and Ezra gave in to their feelings whilst once again talking about Shana. Can either of these couples survive?

Twist time came with the reveal that Sydney wasnā€™t really the sweet and naĆÆve new member of the swimming team she was claiming to be. Sheā€™s actually working with Jenna and Mona to drive Ali out of Rosewood.

Spencer told Toby about her family issues whilst Hanna found Caleb and started to have a heart-to-heart. Their reunion was cut short when she received a text message from Emily who was watching the news with Ali (and arguing with her about her latest lies). The identity of the girl in Aliā€™s grave was revealed as Hanna, Caleb, Aria, Ezra, Emily, Ali, Spencer and Toby watched together. The girl in the grave was missing teenager Bethany Young who went missing from Radley the night that Ali disappeared.

Shortly after they all took in the news, an explosion blew the windows out of Emilyā€™s house. Moving out on to the street to see what had happened, the group saw devastation and Tobyā€™s house burning down. Then that familiar text message sound rang from everyoneā€™s phonesā€¦looks like Aā€™s back!

The episode closed with A listening to a police tracker and putting an Ali doll next to a dollhouse. What could be in store next?

Pretty Little Liars continues Tuesday at 8/7c in the US on ABC Family.
