Michael Gambon leads J.K. Rowling’s The Casual Vacancy cast

The first cast has been confirmed for the forthcoming BBC One mini-series, in association with HBO, based on JK Rowlingā€™s The Casual Vacancy.

Michael Gambon, Keeley Hawes, Rory Kinnear, Monica Dolan, and Julia McKenzie are amongst the star-studded cast. Newcomer Abigail Lawrie will make her screen debut in the series.

Michael Gambon will play the role of Pagford delicatessen owner Howard Mollison with Julia McKenzie as his wife Shirley. Their son Miles will be played by Rufus Jones with Keeley Hawes playing Milesā€™ wife Samantha.

Rory Kinnear will play Barry Fairbrother with Keeley Forsyth as Terri Weedon and Abigail Lawrie as Terriā€™s daughter Krystal. Rounding out the cast confirmed so far are Monica Dolan as Tess Wall, Simon McBurney as Colin Wall, Richard Glover as Simon Price, Marie Critchley as Ruth Price and Michelle Austin as Kay Bawden.

The mini-series will be split over three one-hour parts and is due to begin production on 7th July in South West England.

The Casual VacancyĀ centres on Pagford, a seemingly idyllic English village with a cobbled market square and ancient abbey. Behind the pretty faƧade, however, is a town at war: rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.

More casting is due to be announced in the coming weeks for other central characters.
