24: Live Another Day delivered another of those jaw-dropping moments tonight when Jack’s old adversary Cheng Zhi (Tzi Ma) turned up and it was revealed it was he who was dealing with Adrian Cross (Michael Wincott) and Navarro (Benjamin Bratt) in the sale of intelligence documents.
Before we get to that though, let’s go through the events leading up to the Cheng reveal. The episode picked up with Jack trying to locate Navarro and the over-ride device. After losing him, Jack called Kate (Yvonne Strahovski) to fill her in on Navarro’s double-crossing. After searching for a few minutes, Jack managed to find Navarro and they had a brief shoot-out. Navarro got to his drop point at Liverpool Street station and deposited the over-ride device. He found the documents Adrian left for him but was screwed over when no car was waiting to whisk him away to safety. This gave Jack the opportunity to apprehend Navarro.
Jack then ran into the station to search for the over-ride device and was shocked to discover that it was in the possession of Adrian and Chloe (Mary Lynn Rajskub). He wasn’t however as shocked as Chloe was when she discovered her dodgy beau created the device and had bigger plans for it now it had been retrieved from Margot (Michelle Fairley). Adrian and Chloe made their getaway as Jack stood on the tube platform helpless.
At the CIA base Erik (Gbenga Akkinagbe) took control of the team stepping up following the arrest of Navarro. Kate meanwhile asked an analyst to look at Jordan’s computer and see what he was working on before his murder. Erik then called President Heller (William Devane) to inform him of the device theft.
Kate finally discovered that her husband was set-up by Navarro following the retrieval of files on Jordan’s computer. The information sent her over the edge and Erik restrained her when Navarro was brought in to the office in handcuffs. Kate then told Jack that her husband committed suicide a month into his sentence so clearing his name meant nothing.
Jack went badass next when he interrogated Navarro. Despite breaking various bones in his arm, Jack failed to get Navarro to talk who insisted on full immunity before he would help them find the device.
Chloe got herself into a messy situation when she tried to steal the over-ride device and get help from a truck driver after pretending she needed the toilet. Adrian pulled out a gun and forced Chloe to get in the car so he could take her to Open Cell’s new base. Poor Chloe!
Back at the CIA Kate went crazy on Navarro pointing a gun at his head and threatening to kill him. Jack burst in to break things up but Kate’s intensity got Navarro to talk and he told them the tracking code for the over-ride device. Once he fessed up it was revealed Kate and Jack had staged the whole thing to get him to talk and now he had no way to bargain for immunity. The CIA ran the trace on the over-ride and pin-pointed it to a specific location.
Chloe and Adrian walked into a massacre when they arrived at Open Cell with everyone murdered. It was then that Cheng made himself known with his army of men and he wanted the over-ride device. You may remember it was Cheng who captured and tortured Jack for a year and then put Audrey (Kim Raver) into a catatonic state after torturing her too. Cheng tried to force Adrian to work on the over-ride device following Yates’ modifications but he said he couldn’t do it. Instead Cheng turned his attention to Chloe forcing her to co-operate by shooting Adrian.
Chloe tried to get one over on Cheng but one of his analysts realised that she’d tried to put a virus into the device and foil their plans. Unfortunately for Chloe she gave them access to exactly what they wanted allowing them to launch a submarine missile attack on a Chinese aircraft carrier. Cheng also shot Adrian and killed him just as the wannabe bad guy had revealed to Chloe that her husband and son genuinely did die in an accident.
Jack and Kate headed out on the road to find the device and Adrian. After a frank heart-to-heart, they were run off the road by the Russians who found Jack after Mark (Tate Donovan) told them how to locate him (more on that shortly). They ended the episode locked in a gun fight with the Russians.
Elsewhere in the episode President Heller’s memory started to play up again and Mark felt threatened by Audrey’s reconciliation with Jack. After accusing her of still having feelings for him, Mark then called the Russians and gave them information to track Jack so they could capture him. The President also decided to stay in England until the over-ride device was retrieved.
