10 things we want from Tyrant season 3

Tyrantā€™s second season came to a close in the UK recently and what a jaw-dropping end to a magnificent season.

If you havenā€™t seen the second season of Tyrant and donā€™t want any spoilers, we suggest you stop reading now. If you have seen it and want to hear our thoughts on season 3 keep reading.

For its second season Tyrant got an additional two episodes as it continued the story of Barry Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner), his power hungry brother Jamal (Ashraf Barhom) who is the President of Abuddin, and his family who returned to the US following the events of the first episode of the season. Much of the second season focussed on Jamalā€™s charade that he killed Barry, when he actually dumped him in the desert and left him to fend for himself.

Barry found his way to the resistance fighters who were battling both Jamalā€™s tyrannous reign and the Army of the Caliphate. His wife Molly (Jennifer Finnigan) moved their family back to the US following Barryā€™s ā€˜deathā€™ but was soon drawn back to Abuddin when Sammy (Noah Silver) had to return to claim the inheritance that had been left in his name. Soon Sammy found his way to Barry and realised his father wasnā€™t dead after all.

After telling Molly he was still alive, Barry tried to help Jamal in his battle against the Caliphate. Jamalā€™s wife Leila (Moran Atias) attempted to overthrow her husband for the good of the country but during his speech to announce his stepping down, Jamal went back on his agreement with her. Things soon took a turn for the worse when Jamal was shot by Nusrat (Sibylla Deen) and it looked to us that he was pretty dead.

Elsewhere in the season Jamalā€™s paranoia got the better of him when he believed his son Remi (Keon Alexander) was plotting against him, Amira Al-Fayeed (Alice Krige) was killed when a terrorist attack went wrong, and both Molly and Barry found new love interests, which should make their future together pretty interesting.

1. Jamal to survive. I know it looks very much like heā€™s dead, but I hope Jamal is back in some capacity. If he did come back he would likely be hospitalised and/or disabled thanks to Nusratā€™s attack. I can only imagine what evil deeds Jamal could do with the added pent up frustration of losing his Presidency and being restricted.

2. Barry to take over the Presidency. He attempted to stage a coup in the first season, which almost cost him his life. Now Barry is back in Abuddin and a hero to the people of the town, he is perfectly placed to pick things up from his brother. Iā€™d like to see how he deals with the power, pressure and responsibility of the role, particularly given that he initially never wanted to even be part of his own family at the beginning of season one.

3. Barry and Molly to address their infidelities. Both characters found new love interests in season two. In Mollyā€™s defence she did believe that Barry was dead and as soon as she found out otherwise, she put a stop to her relationship with Jimmy (Jake Weber). Barry on the other hand was drawn to Daliyah (Melia Kreiling) and Sammy was witness to their attraction. Can Barry and Molly really get back to where they were? Not easily is my best.

4. Emma (Anne Winters) to come back. Seriously, how could the whole family just ditch her? Emma was pretty much absent for most of season two but surely if her family are taking (potentially) permanent residence in Abuddin, she should probably join them right?

5. More Sammy. One of the best things about season two was seeing Sammy really step up and become a man. I wasnā€™t keen on the attempt to throw question on his sexuality, especially after how well the show dealt with his coming out of sorts to Molly. Iā€™d like to see this storyline explored more and Iā€™d also like a deeper exploration of his relationship with Barry as there is animosity and resentment there that season two only scratched the surface of.

6. Leila to stand on her own two feet. The most manipulative character in the show, it took quite a while for Leila to grow a pair and stand up to Jamal. Perhaps she was frightened of what life may look like without him by her side but she promised Ahmed (Cameron Ghararee) that she would right the (many) wrongs sheā€™s committed. Either way if Jamal lives she needs to be able to defend herself as sheā€™s surely going to be in his crosshairs after her treachery.

7. Remi to stick around. I wasnā€™t sure about a long-lost son storyline but it worked really well. Remi was like the good part of Jamal and his burgeoning relationship with Nusrat was quite lovely to watch. Sure he pissed off Ahmed along the way and Jamal didnā€™t trust him, but deep down Remi is one of the only morally good characters in the show!

8. Ahmed to get something to do. He pretty much did nothing other than get a haircut in season two did he? Thereā€™s a lot of potential with the character, especially as he has no idea what Jamal did to Nusrat. Iā€™d say Nusratā€™s future is very bleak but that doesnā€™t mean Ahmedā€™s has to be.

9. New characters. The show could do with an injection of new blood to help progress the storyline. Maybe a new love interest for Sammy (RIP Abdul) or more presence for Mollyā€™s family (what ever happened to her sister?)

10. A serious shake-up. The battle between Barry and Jamal has kind of been done to death now. Iā€™d like to see season 3 kick off a whole new storyline. If Barry is indeed the President, thereā€™s scope to really shake things up not only for Abuddin but for the show in general.

Tyrant is expected to return to FX in the US and FOX in the UK later this year. Watch the trailer for the second season of the show:
