Dom Joly interview

When we think of Dom Joly, we think of that bloke with a huge phone attached to his ear, talking very loudly on Trigger Happy TV.

There’s more to Dom than a big giant phone! Recently, Dom has found success with his ITV prank show Fool Britannia, a hidden-camera show in which he unleashes a host of pranks and oddball characters on the unsuspecting public. We love it!

Dom, therefore, is therefore the perfect person to host a new web series on habits of the British public. We spoke to Dom about Bing It On, Trigger Happy TV, and the future.

Thanks for taking the time to speak with us today. How are you?

I’m very well except my left hand is twice its normal size because my cat bit me and it’s got infected.

We’ve heard that you’ve got a new web video series coming out. Can you tell us a bit more about it?

Sure, I got together with Bing to do some funny “street” sketches in which I use a Windows phone to make the British public to think differently about the habits they sleep walk into. I get them to do weird selfies, inflict some “phubbing” on them (using phone to ignore them) it was good fun. The web videos can be viewed at www.bingiton.com

You’ve put on your producer hat for this series. Did you enjoy producing, and is it something you’d like to do more of?

I do a lot of producing. I like to be in charge of what I do as much as possible- I’ve produced most of my own shows- I’m a control freak.

The web series will be about people’s habits. Have you got a habit?

I have many habits- some good ,some bad.  Always have a prawn cocktail and a glass of champagne before I fly. I always avoid cracks in pavements. I always sit on the left hand side of a table. I always turn around 360 degrees before sitting down. I’ve just realised I might have OCD.

What’s been the funniest habit you’ve come across whilst doing this series?

The really rubbish standard of selfies that people take on an industrial level.

And the worst?

The habit people have of ignoring you approaching them by suddenly pretending to be on the phone.

You are releasing a book – can you tell us more about the book, and when will it be released?

I have just started writing my new book, won’t be out for a bit- it’s about all the weird things that have happened to me since Trigger Happy TV- it’s called Fears of A clown and is basically a guide of how to not do show business

You found fame in Trigger Happy TV – do people still associate you with a huge mobile phone?

Yes, I get people shouting HELLO at me at least five times a day on the street. Even after 13 years I still don’t have a funny reply.

Would you do another series of Trigger Happy? (please say yes!!)

No plans, but there is interest in the States so you ever know.

With the web series, Fool Britannia and your upcoming book, you are a very busy man! Have you got anything else lined up?

Yes, I’m off to Iraq for Save the Children, then I’m going to Hong Kong for Xmas and then training  because I’m doing the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in March. I’m all about travel.

We wish you all the best Dom, and thank you for speaking with us.

It was a pleasure- you are very handsome/pretty. If I was 20 years younger I’d smile at you.

The videos are now live on www.bingiton.com
