The West Yorkshire Playhouse has announced forthcoming shows for this season. From astonishing personal accounts through to an international best-seller, this autumn West Yorkshire Playhouse presents four acclaimed plays about bravery, bawdiness and battling-on.
My Perfect Mind – Bradford born classical actor Edward Petherbridge and Told By An Idiot’s Paul Hunter present My Perferct Mind, directed by Kathryn Hunter. Blurring events from a life-changing chapter in Edward’s life and moments from King Lear, the show is a hilarious and haunting celebration of the resilience of the human spirit through the prism of Shakespeare’s great tragedy.

Grounded – Award-winning production Grounded, written by American playwright George Brant, lands at the Playhouse from 23-25 October. A gripping, compulsive new play that flies from the heights of lyricism to the shallows of workaday existence, this moving show follows the story of a hot-rod F16 fighter pilot, performed by Lucy Ellinson.

She Stoops to Conquer – Northern Broadsides present Oliver Goldsmith’s 18th century comedy of manners, in a new production directed by Conrad Nelson. Relocated, in true Northern Broadsides style, from the West Country to the North of England, Goldsmith’s 1773 play is a celebrated story of class, courtship and dysfunctional families. Tongue-tied, uptight Charles Marlow longs for a wife, but finds it easier to have a bit on the side. Barmaid Kate seems fair game – but there’s more to her than meets the eye. Set against the increasingly chaotic proceedings of one very long night, She Stoops to Conquer is filled with ludicrous misunderstandings, larger than life characters, mischief and mayhem.

The Kite Runner – Giles Croft directs the acclaimed stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s international best-selling novel, featuring BBC Casualty actor Ben Turner in the lead role as Amir. In Kabul, two motherless boys learn to crawl, walk and kite-fight side by side. But neither Hassan nor Amir can foresee a terrible incident that will rip their lives apart. This haunting tale of friendship is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of Afghanistan’s monarchy through the Soviet invasion, the exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.
