The full cast has been announced for the European premiere of Dessa Rose, which comes to Trafalgar Studios from 28th July.
Cynthia Erivo (I Can’t Sing!, The Color Purple) will return to the West End to play Dessa Rose, alongside Cassidy Janson (Avenue Q, Wicked, Candide) as Ruth.
The cast of this vibrant musical drama also includes John Addison (Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables), Edward Baruwa (Sister Act, Avenue Q, Les Misérables), Sharon Benson (Hot Mikado, Cats, Carmen Jones), Alexander Evans (The Secret Garden, Carousel) and Cameron Leigh (Imagine This, Calamity Jane, Chicago).
Multi-award winning director Andrew Keates said: ‘In an age of casting inappropriate celebrities just to sell seats, we are very proud to have collected together some of our finest actors, who work in musical theatre, to serve this extraordinary story and indeed respect musical theatre as an art form. Quite simply, I couldn’t have asked for a better cast.’
Dessa Rose will play at Trafalgar Studios from Tuesday 29th July to Saturday 30th August.
Dessa Rose is based on the book by Sherley Anne Williams with lyrics by Lynn Ahrens and music by Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime). The powerful story is set in 1846 in the Antebellum South and follows two young women on their journey to acceptance. With elements of blues, folk, hymns and gospel, Dessa Rose is a blend of history and fiction.
