The Tunnel: Sabotage 2×08 preview

The latest episode of The Tunnel: Sabotage opened up with The Chemist creating a cigar filled with one of his nasty viruses.

Elsewhere the body of Robert Fournier (Johan Heldenbergh) was being tested to determine what killed him. BB (William Ash) was also being held in quarantine for safety.

Karl (Stephen Dillane) and Elise (Clémence Poésy) discussed the plane crash. Inspector Bowden (Stanley Townsend) arrived with the test results that confirmed that Fournier was killed by a Crimean Congo virus. As it can only be transferred by direct contact it meant that BB was in the clear.

Bowden informed them that they were to not investigate things any further and warned Karl to be careful. Elise insisted they would keep working on it but was also told by her superiors to leave it.

At a hotel Vanessa Hamilton (Emilia Fox) was disturbed by room service but said they must wait as she was having a bath. While bathing two men were let into her room and they carefully placed the poisoned cigar in her pack.

Laura (Angel Coulby) met with Gemma and confronted her with information she’d found out about her. She’d uncovered a link between her and Kieran Ashton, the Truth Terrorist, from the first series. It was he who put her up to approaching Laura with lies about Karl. Despite saying horrendous things, Laura didn’t take offense and told her to get some help.

BB took a call from Vanessa Hamilton who wanted to meet with Karl. He took Elise along for the meet and they promised to get her to France with a new identity if she talked.

Meanwhile Bowden was fired by MI5 over the files he gave Karl. While saying his goodbyes he whispered to BB to inform Karl. He and Elise took Hamilton to the Tunnel and attempted to get her to France while BB tried to distract MI5.

While heading through a maintenance tunnel they were caught up with by MI5 who were pursuing them at speed. They initially tried to ram them to stop until Karl had a genius idea of slowing right down in what he called the ‘slowest car chase ever’. With the tunnel not wide enough, MI5 had no choice but to crawl along behind them.

After crossing the midpoint of the Tunnel they stopped and handed Hamilton over to the French. MI5 demanded they return Hamilton but they refused due to ‘matters of national security’. In France she began to reveal parts of what she knew including confirming that Artem Baturin was Koba and that she had met Fournier and The Chemist. During a smoke break, Hamilton lit up the poisoned cigar and promptly died.

Elsewhere in the episode, Karl went home to find a happier Laura. She’d bought a new dog for the kids which Karl named Brian as a joke but the name stuck. Karl explained to her that their house was bugged and she told him about Gemma and Kieran Ashton. They stopped fighting and Karl was allowed back in the bedroom.

Elise’s boyfriend Gael left her. Erykah Klein popped by to tell Elise she was going away to Germany for a short time. The obvious chemistry between them ended in them sleeping together.

Back at work Elise’s team had discovered that Erykah may have bought a tampered phone in Germany that was used to bring down the plane. Elise wouldn’t accept it and was very angry. She tried to defend Erykah and Karl realised she was sleeping with her.

Back home Karl discovered that The Chemist’s real name was Edgar Branco and had ties to Baturin. Later Koba was seen negotiating the early release of his father and he also met with Erykah.

At the end of the episode Karl was woken by Brian barking. Feeling funny he realised that they were being poisoned by carbon monoxide. He got his family out and new it was an attempt on his life. He re-entered the house and knowing that MI5 would be listening he stated that he would keep his family safe and never walk away from the investigation.
