The Resident arrived in the UK this week and the hit US medical drama certainly packed plenty into the pilot.
Within the first few minutes Dr. Randolph Bell (Bruce Greenwood) killed a patient during a routine appendectomy thanks to his unsteady hands. It was quickly established that the majority of the people who work in the hospital were happy to keep quiet and protect him, that is except for senior resident Dr. Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry).
New intern Devon Pravesh (Manish Dayal) arrived in the midst of the episode’s drama and he was assigned to work under Hawkins, something he quickly became unhappy about. Hawkins abrupt demeanour led Devon to Dr. Nurse Nicolette ‘Nic’ Nevin (Emily VanCamp), who refused to reassign him.

Devon worked on a patient who was a former drug addict and consistently ignored Hawkins warnings to listen to everything he said. His actions led to the girl being declared brain dead and he struggled to deal with the situation as her family clung on to hope that she would wake up.
Elsewhere in the episode Dr. Bell was desperate to show off some new cutting-edge operating technology and insisted on doing a demonstration, much to the horror of everyone else. Realising he couldn’t do it, he blackmailed Dr. Mina Okafor (Shaunette RenĆ©e Wilson) threatening to stop her from getting her visa unless she assisted him.
The next episode of the season is Independence Day. When Conrad’s plans for a heart transplant go awry, he risks his job to rectify the matter.
