For its second season Supergirl moved from CBS to The CW, where the show found a more natural home alongside other DC series Arrow, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. With an increased episode count (the season had 22 episodes rather than 20), Supergirl found its groove improving significantly on the first season. At the end of the first season Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist) found a pod similar to the one she arrived on Earth in and fans had to wait until the season two opener to find out who or what was inside it.
Supergirl: The Complete Second Season opens with The Adventures of Supergirl and introduces the character of Clark Kent aka Superman (Tyler Hoechlin), who makes a handful of appearances over the course of the season. It also picks up the mystery of the pod revealing that there’s a man known as Mon-El (Chris Wood) inside it. The arrival of Mon-El sets into motion a romance storyline for Kara, which sidelines her burgeoning relationship with James Olsen (Mechad Brooks), much to the annoyance of some of the show’s fans.
During the second season, Supergirl aims to really develop its characters and for the most part it succeeds. Kara undergoes quite the transformation as she tries to understand her place in the world and her sister Alex (Chyler Leigh) goes on a major journey centred around her sexuality when police office Maggie Sawyer (Floriana Lima) unexpectedly stirs up feelings inside her she hasn’t previously addressed.
Aside from Mon-El and Maggie, the other major new character introduced during season 2 is Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath). Lena is determined to prove that not everyone with the Luthor name is bad and she forges an interesting friendship with Kara. She also has to battle against her dastardly mother Lillian (Brenda Strong), who is determined to wreak havoc and get rid of aliens from National City.
The core storyline for the season is really about Mon-El. From his initial arrival, the season starts to unfold the mystery of the character and where he came from. I don’t want to say too much so I don’t ruin any surprises for those who haven’t seen the season yet but later on in the season the arrival of two characters (played by TV veterans Teri Hatcher and Kevin Sorbo) kick off a multi-episode arc that’s packed with excitement and twists that hurtle through to the season finale.
One of the disappointing things about season 2 is that Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) is largely absent. When the show moved its production from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Flockhart decided not to continue as a series regular but she does make a few appearances. Cat is such a larger than life character that Flockhart plays expertly and it’s a shame she’s not in the season more.
Extras on the Blu-ray release include five featurettes, a 2016 Comic-Con Panel, a look at the alien fight club that’s integral to the episode Survivors, an audio commentary on Supergirl Lives and a conversation with Andrew Kreisberg and Kevin Smith.
Supergirl: The Complete Second Season is a whole lot of fun. The show often doesn’t get the credit it deserves, over-shadowed by the more male focused other DC shows. Benoist makes for a fantastic lead and Supergirl gets a nice balance of action, drama and emotion. For me the second season is much stronger than the current seasons of its related shows and I can’t wait for the show to kick off its third season later this year.
