A.D. was revealed and the Liars were put through their final test on the Pretty Little Liars series finale.
If you haven’t seen the series finale and want to avoid huge spoilers, we suggest you stop reading now. If you have seen it and want to relive all of the action keep reading.
She knows too much
The final episode kicked off with Mona (Janel Parrish) in an institution where she was imagining controlling the Liars whilst staring into a snow globe. She was interrupted by the arrival of A.D. and as she looked into his/her face, she admitted that A.D. wasn’t who she expected it to be.
One year later…
The events moved on a year as Aria (Lucy Hale) and Ezra’s (Ian Harding) wedding approached. With a rehearsal dinner to get through before the actual wedding, the love birds paid a visit to a movie studio that was interested in turning their book into a movie.
Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) weren’t seeing eye-to-eye after Hanna agreed to let Mona temporarily live with them as part of her rehabilitation. The tension was palpable with Caleb admitting to Hanna that he felt like a passenger in their relationship, even though they had agreed to try for a baby.
Alison (Sasha Pieterse) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) were still together and raising twins (!!). It was established early on that Alison was having secret meetings with Pam (Nia Peeples) and Emily’s suspicions drove her to snap as she confronted Alison after seeing them whispering to one another during the rehearsal dinner. Turns out Alison was asking Pam for Emily’s grandmother’s ring so she could propose, and with that revelation the two got engaged.
Spencer (Troian Bellisario) was rebuilding her relationship with Melissa (Torrey DeVitto) and with Veronica (Lesley Fera) now that Mary (Andrea Parker) was in prison for the murder of Archer (Huw Collins). She was also reconnecting with Toby (Keegan Allen) who returned to Rosewood following his travels.
Call the wedding off
Spencer and Ali threw a surprise dinner for Aria and Ezra ahead of their wedding at the new-look Lost Woods Resort. As the friends celebrated the upcoming nuptials, a shadowy figure in a black hood was shown to be watching them. That person was revealed to be Melissa but after a couple more sightings it was shown to actually be Mona wearing a Melissa mask.
Following the dinner the various couples went off together to get intimate and later Aria received a phone call that left her in tears. Her friends urged her to tell Ezra and she instead decided the wedding couldn’t take place. They talked her down off the ledge and Aria eventually told Ezra what the matter was – she’d found out that she couldn’t have children.
Initially taking the news well, Ezra was angry when he found out that Aria had known for a long time and sought three doctors to confirm that she indeed couldn’t have any children. Not knowing what the next day held, Aria received a text from Ezra saying he wasn’t coming to the wedding.
And A.D. is….
Following Spencer’s evening with Toby, she returned to the barn to shower. There she was confronted by Mona who knocked her unconscious. When Spencer woke up she was being held in a cell and it was revealed that she had a twin (the fan theories were correct!). Mary, who had escaped from prison, was also in the bunker with her and injected her with something to put her to sleep.
When she came round, Spencer met her secret twin sister Alex Drake (who sported a very dodgy English accent). Turns out that Alex was born after Spencer and sold to a family in England. That family didn’t care for her and she ended up in the child care system. While working as a bar maid in London, Alex had a chance encounter with Wren (Julian Morris) who mistook her for Spencer. The two started dating and Alex connected with her half-sister Charlotte (Vanessa Ray) who was dating Archer (Huw Collins).
Alex had been pretending to be Spencer for a while and that airport scene with Wren (that started fans speculating about Spencer’s twin) was indeed Alex and not Spencer. With Mary and Spencer held in a bunker, Alex planned to take over her sister’s life without anyone knowing she existed. She also revealed that she had killed Wren and was wearing his ashes as a diamond around her neck. Oh and Wren is the father of Alison and Emily’s babies!
Spencer soon found out that Mary wasn’t the only person in the bunker with her, Ezra was there too. At the rehearsal dinner Ezra booked a hot air balloon flight for him and Aria and when he spoke to Alex about it thinking she was Spencer, Alex freaked out and knocked him unconscious before locking him up too.
Mary told Spencer that she hadn’t known that Alex was alive until recently and the two shared an emotional hug. Spencer took a hairpin from Mary and used that to pick the locks on the cell doors. She escaped with Ezra but they found they were in a fake underground world (that must have taken some building!).
I smell a rat
Alex carried on pretending to be Spencer but she didn’t fool everyone. Jenna (Tammin Sursok) was at the Hastings’ law firm and she bumped into Spencer. Noticing that she smelt different, Jenna tipped off Toby who told everyone else. He admitted he’d noticed a few strange things about Spencer recently and they concluded that the Spencer they’d been around the past day wasn’t actually Spencer at all. Kudos to Emily for pointing out how absurd the twist was!
With Caleb’s help they found out that Spencer was being held at the house that Toby built. The group arrived with Mona and Toby pointed a gun at Spencer and Alex as he tried to work out which one was which. He asked them to tell him their favourite poem from a book that Spencer had given him, and that revealed the true Spencer.
Alex was arrested, Mary escaped and Spencer and Ezra were saved!
Aria and Ezra married at the Rosewood church and before they went on their honeymoon, Aria spent time with her friends. Hanna revealed that she was pregnant and the other Liars shed tears of relief as their ordeal was over and they could all finally be happy.
Mona meanwhile moved to Paris to open a doll shop where she kept Mary and Alex as living dolls in a bunker (seriously does everyone have a secret bunker?)
As the episode drew to a close Addison (Ava Allan) went missing in a scenario that recalled the pilot episode of the show. Earlier in the finale Addison had been nasty to Alison during class and was out-sassed by Jenna. Could this be the spin-off that people are speculating about? Also how nice was that nod to Maya with her niece appearing in the show as one of Addison’s friends?
