Pretty Little Liars returned this week to kick off its final run of 10 episodes.

Playtime picked up exactly where Pretty Little Liars season 7A finished. Spencer (Troian Bellisario) was rushed to hospital to be treated for her gunshot wound with Aria (Lucy Hale), Emily (Shay Mitchell), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Alison (Sasha Pieterse) in tow. As Spencer went into surgery, the Liars were shocked to see Toby (Keegan Allen) being wheeled in on a stretcher.
Things jumped 1 week forward with Toby recuperating in hospital and Spencer back home. Yvonne (Kara Royster) had been put into a medically induced coma following her surgery and hadn’t woken up since the accident (which was now being blamed on a deer in the road).
Following the revelation from Mary Drake (Andrea Parker) that she was Spencer’s biological mother, Spencer obviously had questions for Veronica (Lesley Fera). At first Veronica tried to talk her way out of the situation but eventually she delivered the truth; Mary is Spencer’s mother and she tricked Peter (Nolan North) into sleeping with her by pretending to be Jessica DiLaurentis (Andrea Parker). Veronica chose to raise Spencer as her own rather than let her go into children’s home.
Wanna play a game?
A huge black box with a lovely red bow on was delivered to Spencer’s barn and she assembled the girls so they could open it together. After reading a note from A.D. and realising their nightmare still wasn’t over, they opened the box to find a board game inside that promised to be the ‘endgame’. Each of the Liars had their own figure and the board featured landmarks from around Rosewood. They agreed not to play it but Spencer couldn’t leave it alone.
With Mary missing, Spencer was desperate to know more about her birth mother and she received a text message from A.D. promising to reveal more if she played the game. Spencer started it and was faced with picking either ‘Truth’ or ‘Dare’. She selected ‘Dare’ and was instructed to visit Toby in the hospital in exchange for a reward. Doing as she was told, Spencer went to the hospital and when she returned home, the game gave her a letter written by Mary while she was pregnant in Radley.
Spencer told the Liars what she had done and they weren’t all that happy about it. Hanna tried to destroy the game to find out what else was inside it but as she did so, the smartphone that formed part of the game showed footage of the Liars digging up Archer’s (Huw Collins) body.
The final scene of the episode showed Jenna (Tammin Sursok) drinking tea before being given a braille book. She read it and said ‘endgame’ with a smile on her face.
Ice cold Emison
Alison spent the episode giving Emily the cold shoulder and she was furious to discover that Paige (Lindsey Shaw) was now working at Rosewood High too. Emily tried to stay neutral but during a committee meeting Alison was hostile to Paige and dragged up her past. Following the meeting Emily confronted Alison about her behaviour. Alison claimed to be feeling fragile because she was pregnant and alone. An exasperated Emily told her not to kiss her again until she knew why she was doing it and said she was sick of having to prove that she loved Alison.
Emily told Paige to expect an apology from Alison but Paige was having none of it. She admitted to Emily that she was tired of Alison always playing the victim and Emily running to her rescue all the time.
Hanna distracted herself from the latest A.D. drama by throwing herself back into her fashion career. With a little help from Mona (Janel Parrish), Hanna met with Katherine Daly (Emma Dumont), the daughter of a senator who had a lot of public interest. Katherine agreed to wear Hanna’s dresses but mistakenly thought Mona was the boss of the company. Hanna confronted Mona who insisted it was a mistake before calling Katherine to explain.
Three in the bed
Aria was left in limbo thanks to the unexpected return of Nicole (Rebecca Breeds), which was taking all of Ezra’s (Ian Harding) attention. Just as she was leaving Ezra’s apartment with her things, he returned and told her to stay. Confused as to whether they were getting married still, and unsure of what Ezra had told Nicole about them, Aria continued planning the wedding with Hanna’s help. She bumped into Holden (Shane Coffey), whose sister ran one of the wedding firms Aria was considering, and the two caught up. Aria attempted to reintroduce Ezra and Holden but Ezra was in a rush as Nicole’s parents had asked him to go to New York.
