Tom Figgins – Troubadour live review

Let us introduce you, to Tom Figgins. We caught his set at the Troubadour last night and we have to say, that he was simply brilliant. One man, one guitar, one great voice and a whole bunch of great songs, equals one giant recipe for success! His years of relentless gigging have paid off, as he has stage presence with an abundance of humbleness and a down to earth approach, which is guaranteed to endear him to a very large audience. We think that we can describe his songs as coming from the soul, with a depth and catchiness that make you want to listen to them without flinching or without also taking your eyes or ears off him as he performs. He has a great recording voice, but it also the perfect live performer, capturing the audience. His songs are a hybrid of an acoustic sound, a tinge of folk, a twist of rootsy ruggedness blended in with a cool rock sound.

You only need to see him performing once to know that you’ll be hooked and will want to keep an eye out for him for his future appearances and gigs. We last had this level of excitement around a new artist when we first witnessed The Lumineers performing in London, who we championed and we felt that buzz again last night. You know when you see a band or artist and you think, yep, they’re pretty good aren’t they and sit back and enjoy every minute of it and you’re feeling smug, as you discovered them before the whole world and their son caught on too? That’s the feeling, right there. We’re excited! Our favourite songs of the night were Flame of Desire, I’ll Forever Be and Let Your Roots Grow, but the whole set was just brilliant.

All Tom now needs is for a mass of radio air play, more exposure and for word of mouth to get around (which it will) and he will continue to go from strength to strength. If you missed his gig at the Troubadour last night, the good news for you is that he has a residency there for the coming months and you can catch him playing there on the following dates: September 12th, October 10th, November 14th and December 12th 2014. You do not want to miss out!

Tom releases his brilliant track, Let Your Roots Grow on July 20th. Keep your eyes peeled for our interview with Tom, which will be coming shortly!

I am passionate about everything any anything that involves music, theatre and the arts! I love interviewing artists and getting to learn more about them. When I’m not doing artsy things, you may find me watching rugby, singing with my choir and travelling to a new part of the world. Carpe diem.
