Old Dominion The Roundhouse London live review

Old Dominion has been quickly building their fanbase since the release of their debut album Meat and Candy in 2015. With three number one singles under their belt, the band is experiencing even more success with their latest album Happy Endings, released earlier this year. Itā€™s been 18 months since the band was last in the UK and fans have been eagerly awaiting for them to return following their much-buzzed performances at C2C: Country to Country. Last night Old Dominion kicked off their support slot run on Thomas Rhettā€™s Home Team Tour at The Roundhouse in London.

Leading up to the show, there seemed to be as much buzz about Old Dominion as there was Thomas Rhett. It was clear from the opening song Snapback that the majority of the audience were very familiar with Old Dominion, as they knew every word to every song. Snapback is one of the bandā€™s biggest hits and it started things off on the right note.

Meat and Candy album track Crazy Beautiful Sexy came next followed the bandā€™s latest single Written in the Sand. For me those two songs together mellowed out the set more than I would have liked too early on but thankfully things kicked up a notch with No Such Thing as a Broken Heart. The band got a little louder, their energy was more apparent and the crowd was on fire singing along at the top of their voices.

From that point on Old Dominion fed off the crowd, with lead vocalist Matthew Ramsey regularly interacting with the audience and thanking everyone for supporting the band. The funky Hotel Key was a highlight that came at the mid-point of the set but Break Up With Him, the bandā€™s biggest hit so far, was the moment that the audience exploded.

Other highlights included the laidback feel of Nowhere Fast and the light rock vibe of So You Go, which would have had lighters in the air if that was still a thing people did at concerts.

Throughout the set the band was tight. Ramsey admitted that they were all a little jet-lagged, and that was evident for the first few songs, but they found their mojo and put on a solid opening set. Ramsey sounded great vocally and the harmonies were on point.

Song For Another Time brought things to a close and it was the perfect end to the bandā€™s set. The song is a fan favourite and it had quite an epic feel in the surroundings of The Roundhouse.

Old Dominion put on a solid show last night. They suitably warmed the audience up before Thomas Rhett and Iā€™m looking forward to what they do on the main stage at C2C: Country to Country in 2018. The band is very likeable and their live performance really brings their songs to life. Iā€™m pretty sure they picked up plenty more fans last night too.
