The Lumineers – Cleopatra album review

I have been a huge fan of The Lumineers ever since I saw them performing at their first London showcase in East London’s Shoreditch House. Their mischievous and outgoing streak saw them singing all over the restaurant, climbing over tables and chairs – banging drum sticks on light fittings and taking a detour from the stage, which certainly got everyone’s attention. They did something similar when I saw them play at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire, including taking the very huge double bass for a walk amongst the fans!

Their catchy tunes are instantly memorable. I knew that this band would go on to huge things. I told everyone I knew about them. It didn’t take long for the public to latch on, and the band went on to released a hugely successful album and the band have been nominated for a Grammy award. Cleopatra is The Lumineers second album.

The album opens up with Sleep on the Floor, which starts as a very slow and soulful track, before picking up speed around 2 minutes in. Ophelia is going to be one of those sing a long tracks that they are famous for. The storytelling songs continue on this album and title track Cleopatra is a beautiful song, about a lost love.

Angela is one of my favourites on this album. Lyrically, this album is very strong. Those stripped back moments throughout the album make the words stand out ten fold, and rightly so, they are worth hearing. Gale Song, Long Way From Home and My Eyes sees The Lumineers in a slow, reflective mode.

The overall feel to the album is mellow, stripped back and chilled out. Those rousing vocals that brim with passion can be heard on every song. Every song is very much in The Lumineers mould and has their stamp over each song. There are only 10 songs on the album and I would have liked to have seen a few more livelier songs, as when I think of the band, I instantly think of their overwhelming energy. They have stuck to their folk-rock/Americana feel and this album is one that will be played over and over again.
