Peter Andre is back to making music, with the release of his new album, Big Night. He has been away from the music scene of late, due to his successful television career, which has seen him gain an army of fans, due to his personality and all round good-guy, doting-father, family man persona. Peter’s popularity went in to overdrive after his appearance on I’m a Celebrity….Get Me Out Of Here, which let the camera’s see a different side to the man they thought they knew. Now, you can catch him on the small screen, presenting 60-minute makeover. For kids of the 90’s like myself, Peter Andre was ingrained in to our minds as the 90’s perma-tanned, slightly cheesy 6-packed, oiled up singer, who gave us Mysterious Girl and was hardly ever out of the gossip magazine’s, mostly due to his relationships, rather than reporting heavily on his music.
Big Night – the title track is a jazzy-swinging pop number, which makes you want to click your fingers listening to it and it is a good feel-good track to kick the album off. Kid transports us to the 50’s with it’s swing style, Peter’s falsetto’s are pretty good and the piano licks adds a nice element. Preach is a smooth and mellow track, it’s quietly sexy, in a subtle way, conjuring up images of gentlemen sipping whisky around a piano, the backing singers add a lovely warmth to the track.
Peter recently said that it was always his dream to go to New Orleans to check out the music bars and all that it has to offer. This song is a tribute to his visit there and yes, it has the blues running through it, with even a small reference to hurricane Katrina. Just A Jam is what it says on the tin and has a strong 80’s element to it. Beware livens the album up again, with some impressive musicians playing harmoniously together and they all gel well together. Would You Mind has a 50’s/60’s style to it and it is pure fun, brimming with melodies and old-fashioned charming lyrics. Where would an album be without a good old love-song? Here it comes in the form of Jessie Ryder, a song dedicated to a mysterious woman (not THAT mysterious girl), we assume she’s fictitious, as we’re not sure who she is? It has a country-esque style about it, they could have taken this track further down that route if they wanted, but we’re not sure that was in keeping with the style of the album, it’s another nice and simple track. A slowie is heard in the shape of I Do, as the title suggests, it is about more love and it’s quite sweet. Birdie Blues is a really nice track to finish the album off. It sounds like we can hear the faint sounds of a djembe beats, which adds a mellow reggae theme and the ladies voices in the background add a slight gospel edge to a totally chilled out blues/soul track. If there’s going to be one track that sticks in your head after listening to the album, we think it will be the Birdie Blues.
Big Night, his first album in two years is a million miles away from his purely cheesy-pop roots. The album shows Peter in a totally different light, with the songs displaying a mixture of sounds and there are some really decent tracks in the album. We were at his album launch recently and the tracks sound even better live in our opinion and you get a sense of what the album is about, when you hear the songs being played with live musicians. Peter will be going on tour with the album and has recently released a series of dates where you can catch him performing, up and down the UK. This is a really great effort from Peter Andre and is probably the best album that he has ever released. His fans as always, are going to adore it. We think you should put previous expectations aside and give the album a listen, you could be pleasantly surprised.
