Lewis Watson – The Wild EP review

20-year-old Lewis Watson first established himself by going the independent route with his music and reaping the benefits. Whilst many youngsters are trying the all-too alluring route of talent shows, Watson decided to work at his craft and build his audience online. His debut EP It’s Got Four Sad Songs On It BTW brought him to the attention of a large online fanbase giving him a fantastic platform to build from.  Quickly snapped up by Warner Bros Records, Lewis is releasing his new four-track EP The Wild.

The Wild has been building a buzz online for the past few weeks as fans anticipate the release.  Opening with title track, Watson eases you into the EP with gentle acoustic melodies and a soft beat. Like the greatest singer-songwriters his vocal is delivered like a story and wins you over with its natural charm.

The other three songs on the album prove that a singer-songwriter doesn’t necessarily have to stick to one sound. The traditional idea is someone stood with a guitar singing but Watson changes that perception. Each of the songs sounds very different from the other. EP highlight It Could Be Better is the more traditional acoustic solo song you’d expect from an artist like Watson whilst Little Darling packs an emotional punch thanks to Watson’s moving vocal. EP closer Hold On marries a strong beat with Watson’s falsetto as he explores his higher register. The end result is something atmospheric and stirring that makes you sit up and take notice.

One of the things we love about Lewis Watson is that he actually sounds fresh and original. Currently solo male artists of this nature are moulded to sound just like Ed Sheeran which isn’t what we need. We have an Ed Sheeran and he’s great but we don’t need another one. Watson’s music is from the heart and his vocal is natural, emotive and passionate.

The Wild is a strong offering from a bright new talent. With singer-songwriters coming back into the spotlight this could be quite the year for Watson. His talent is undeniable and we can’t wait to hear more from him. Based on The Wild he should see his fanbase explode as 2013 continues on and we suggest you get acquainted with Watson now before the rest of the world discovers him.
