Josh Rouse – The Happiness Waltz album review

The title of Josh Rouse’s tenth studio album suggests a cheery ride and The Happiness Waltz certainly delivers a blissful collection of positive songs with an overall contented feel, revealed in one quick scan of the track listing before the record even plays.

The feel-good template is cemented from the outset with opener Julie (Come Out Of The Rain) boasting a country-pop vibe complete with one of the album’s catchiest choruses.

The American singer/songwriter’s optimistic outlook is prevalent throughout and his upbeat attitude proves surprisingly infectious. Clearly marking a much brighter time in Rouse’s life, the lyrical themes remain deeply personal echoing meaningful sentiments which convey a true sense of honesty and reveal a genuine humility.

Simple Pleasure combines tightly woven pop melodies with breezy guitar licks and a joyful chorus, while It’s Good To Have You goes back to basics for an ode to love that’s full of charm.

Having never truly achieved mainstream success in the UK, the artist continues his quiet assault on our isles. With his amiable laidback folk-rock vibe and nice-boy-come-good appeal, the artist attracts listeners of all ages, although his sound is not unlike other singer/songwriters before him. Whilst this album is unlikely to break any musical boundaries, Rouse’s Jack Johnson like view of the world is modestly inspirational and whimsically simple and unique titles such as This Movie’s Way Too Long will linger in our minds.

With its enjoyable tranquil style and comforting vocals, we suggest that The Happiness Waltz is best served with a chilled glass of wine whilst basking in the elusive spring sunshine.
