Jenn Bostic’s song Jealous Of The Angels catapulted her to the public consciousness. It was a song that has won her numerous awards and brought her music to the attention of millions, worldwide. The song was written by Jenn, as a tribute to her father, who she sadly lost in a car accident when she was just 10 years old. The father-daughter relationship is particularly special and we can only imagine what Jenn must have gone through. In February this year, she treated her UK fans by performing a series of live dates. Jenn says: “It’s been a dream of mine to perform in Europe since I started singing and the tour with Christian was absolutely incredible. The reaction from the audience was overwhelming. I’ve been playing acoustic tours across the US for the past three years and I love sharing my stories and songs and meeting new people.” We have heard a lot about Jenn Bostic and we were pretty excited to have a listen to her album, Jealous.
The huge song that we wanted to listen closely to was Jealous Of The Angels. You only have to listen to the opening first few lines on this song, before its lyrics immediately hit you. You can hear every genuine sentiment and it’s no surprise that the song has won her so many awards. The song comes straight from her heart and there is not a soul alive that won’t be touched by such lyrics as “I didn’t know today would be our last, Or that I’d have to say goodbye to you so fast, I’m so numb, I can’t feel anymore, Prayin’ you’d just walk back through that door, And tell me that I was only dreamin, You’re not really gone as long as I believe”. This is when you feel a lump in your throat time and the lyrics are so real, that it gets your bottom lip wobbling, thinking about loved ones that you’ve lost, which is emphasised even more, when she sings that she is ‘Jeaous of the Angels’. Many people however, have commented that this song has given them a lot of strength and given them comfort during difficult times of thinking of loved ones that are not around anymore and this is something that Jenn is very proud of. Having the ability to write such an amazing song at such a young age, is incredible.
We were struck by how up-beat the song called Change was. When the chorus kicks in, the tempo and feel of the song shows us that Jenn is one independent, sassy lady, which was a very pleasant surprise and there is nothing like having another feisty female to add to the charts. Not Yet shows that Jenn is not a one trick pony and that she is a very versatile singer, showing that she can have the power of a lioness whilst singing a song. Wait For Me is another uplifting track, stamped with seeing the positivity, with lyrics such as “even a broken bird will sing”. Missin’ A Man is a very soulful song, similar in style to the Beautiful South, it’s very beautiful and shows that her voice can also be husky and seductive.
The whole album is a wonderful surprise, as there is so much diversity on it. For us, Jenn has the whole package that one would want in a singer/artist and the album has the maturity of someone who sounds like this is their fifth album perhaps and they have grown as an artist over the years to be able to come up with work like this. For this to be her debut album, is truly remarkable. The album is very much uplifting and an affirmation to life and noting that it should be worth living and that the small things really don’t matter – all those silly and petty little things that people can often dramatise, really and truly do not matter, things could be a whole lot worse. Jealous will touch everyone that has the pleasure of listening to it.
The power in the songs reminds us of Kelly Clarkson, the soul of her vocals reminds us of artists from a by-gone era and her honesty and bravery in exposing her true feelings is something that is to be completely admired. Artists often hold something back and Jenn is an artist who does not do that and she wears her heart on her sleeve, what you see is what you get. Jenn is a cross-genre artist, meaning that she cannot be pigeon-holed to one specific market and she will appeal broadly to every age, across every genre and she has songs that are classic and will be around for many, many years to come. Bostic deserves great success and we know that she will have a very long career ahead of her. She is the real deal and we haven’t seen such talent is a young songwriter in a long time.
