Young Fathers were announced as the winners of the 2014 Barclaycard Mercury Prize for Album of the Year last night.
Their album Dead triumphed over the other 11 nominees and the news was announced during a live ceremony at London’s Roundhouse. As well as picking up the award, the band also collected a cheque for £20,000.
On collecting the award Young Fathers kept it simple saying only ‘Thank you, thank you. We love you all!’
Simon Frith, Chair of Judges, said, “Young Fathers have a unique take on urban British music, brimming with ideas forceful, unexpected and moving.”
The Awards show will be broadcast in full on Channel 4 at 11.40pm on Friday night. All 12 of the shortlisted artists performed a track from their album.
Many of the artists are also making the recordings of their live performances available to download exclusively from iTunes in order to raise money for War Child. Go to www.itunes.com/mercuryprize for more information.
