Madonna Month: Happy Birthday Madonna! Our Top 5 should-have-been-singles

Happy Birthday Madonna! The legendary singer, songwriter, performer, actress and all round superstar, turns 60 today and we’re sure they’ll be a big party going on in the Ciccone house tonight.

We’ve been paying homage to Madge this whole month, but today we are pausing our A to Z of Madonna Singles to bring you our top 5 choices of the singles that should have been.

1. Rebel Heart

The title track from Madonna’s last album is an acoustic style, uplifting track talking about the journey that she’s been on and how Madonna has always done things her way.  It’s a slice of mature pop that we think could’ve perhaps taken the album campaign in a different direction had it been the lead single.

2. White Heat

Madonna’s True Blue album is full of hits and we think they could’ve milked a sixth single from the album and we’ve opted for White Heat (although could easily have been Where’s the Party).  From the old gangster movie spoken intro to the demanding chorus, this track screams for an Ocean’s 11 type video with Madonna playing the thief that gets away with it all.

3. Thief of Hearts

Before it was Britney Bitch, Madonna was using the B word to good effect in Erotica’s Thief of Hearts.  A full on sass fest from Ms Ciccone, the track deals with those ladies that pretend to be your bestie then run off with your boyfriend.  A Madonna scorned…

4. Inside of Me

Featuring a sample of Aaliyah’s classic Back & Forth, Inside of Me featured a different breathy kind of vocal from Madonna. It should have been a single as it shows a softer and more vulnerable side to the icon who is often criticised for being too steely with her emotions.

5. Beat Goes On

No, not a cover of the Sonny and Cher classic, but a laidback groove that blends hip hop with disco, Beat Goes On, could’ve been a great second single from 2008’s Hard Candy album.  It features a rap from Kanye West and production from The Neptunes which adds to the flavour of this effortlessly funky track.

All month we’ve been asking you to vote for your favourite Madonna album.  At the time of writing, Ray of Light was in the lead with Erotica and Confessions on a Dancefloor hot on its heels.
