Madonna Month: EF readers vote Madonna’s best album

To celebrate Madonna’s 60th birthday earlier this month, we asked you to vote for her best ever album and vote you did. Hundreds of votes were cast and we can now reveal which album you picked as your favourite.

In reverse order, here are the top 5 Madonna albums as voted for by EF readers:

5. True Blue

The album that cemented Madonna as one of the biggest popstars of the 80s, True Blue is nine tracks of near pop perfection as 7% of you agree.  Released in summer 1986, the album spawned five hit singles including three UK no.1s; the most from any of her albums.  Madonna also co-wrote and co-produced all the tracks for the first time and working mainly with Patrick Leonard and Stephen Bray.  This was an artist taking control of her career and gave us monster hits like La Isla Bonita, Papa Don’t Preach and of course True Blue.

4. Like A Prayer

Three years after the pure pop of True Blue, Madonna released the introspective Like A Prayer dealing with personal themes such as the death of her mother when she was just a child (Promise to Try) and how that affected her relationship with her father (Oh Father). She co-wrote and co-produced every track on the album once again and worked with Stephen Bray and Patrick Leonard as well as one track, Love Song, that she wrote with Prince. Sonically the album felt much more mature in style blending pop, soul and gospel and spawned six singles globally; Like A Prayer, Express Yourself, Cherish, Oh Father, Dear Jessie and Keep It Together.  It gained 12% of the vote.

3. Confessions on a Dancefloor

In 2005, Madonna came back with a bang when she released the ABBA sampling, electro-disco smash Hung Up which shot straight to the top of the UK singles chart and set the tone for her most dancefloor friendly album ever, Confessions on a Dancefloor. Predominantly produced by Madonna with Stuart Price, the album is one long mix of 12 dance tracks including the singles Get Together, Sorry and Jump. It gave Madonna four top 10 UK singles including two no.1s and was certified 4 x Platinum for UK sales. Plus it made leotards cool again!  It had 16% of the vote.

2. Erotica

In 1992 Madonna upped the sex factor by introducing us to her dominatrix alter-ego Dita on the title track from her album Erotica. It gained as many haters as it did fans, but Erotica is a fantastic album when listened to away from the hype of Madonna’s SEX book which was released at the same time. This album gave us the brilliant Bad Girl with a video that stars Christopher Walken and sees Madonna strangled by a pair of tights. Plus Madonna’s take on the slinky Fever and the disco-tinged Deeper and Deeper.  At first it looked like Erotica was going to be your favourite Madonna album but in the end it just missed out, gaining 19% of the vote.

1. Ray of Light

Congratulations go to Ray of Light who received nearly 1/4 of all votes. 1998’s opus, is often picked by critics as Madonna’s finest work and now EF readers have crowned it their favourite too. Following the birth of Lourdes, this album blends electro, pop, trip hop and eastern music with lyrics that give an insight to Madonna’s earth mother vibe at the time. Madonna worked predominantly with UK DJ/Producer William Orbit on the album which has a spirtual feeling with songs like shanti shanti really emphasising that theme. It delivered five top 10 UK hits including Frozen, Drowned World, Nothing Really Matters and The Power of Goodbye. It is one of her biggest selling UK albums of all time, having been certified 6 x Platinum.
