Madonna Month: A to Z of Madonna Singles – R

Her Madgesty is celebrating her 60th birthday this month so we’re dedicating August to the Queen of Pop.  We will be picking our A to Z of Madonna singles each day this month as well as asking you to vote for your favourite Madonna album.

Today is brought to you by the letter R.

R is for Ray of Light.  The title track and second single from her multi-platinum album, this uplifting track is all about being free and is infectious as chickenpox with its plucking good guitar riff over insistent dance beats.

Single facts

  • Ray of Light is based on a song by lesser known UK folk duo Curtiss Maldoon called Sepheryn
  • The video was directed by Jonas Ã…kerlund (Smack My Bitch Up) and is sped up so we see Madonna (who is rocking double denim) in front of various locations to portray a day in the life of the world.
  • It was beaten to no.1 in the UK by All Saints double a-side Lady Marmalade/Under The Bridge
  • Ray of Light was co-produced by Madonna and dance producer/DJ William Orbit

Other R’s include Rescue Me from The Immaculate Collection and Revolver from her last hits collection Celebration, plus the gorgeous Rain from Erotica. Which would you have picked? Tell us @entfocusmusic and what you’d pick for the letter S.

See our other choices (updated daily) in our Madonna A to Z of singles.
