Madonna Month: A to Z of Madonna Singles – D

Her Madgesty is celebrating her 60th birthday this month so we’re dedicating August to the Queen of Pop.  We will be picking our A to Z of Madonna singles each day this month as well as asking you to vote for your favourite Madonna album.

We have reached the letter D.

D is for Don’t Tell Me.  The second single from 2000’s Music album, Don’t Tell Me pushed the cowboy aesthetic to the max with a simplistic video that sees Madonna wearing a cowboy hat walking on a treadmill to mimic the open road of the wild west.  It’s a laidback, guitar chopped song co-produced with Mirwais.

Single facts

  • Don’t Tell Me was borne out of a song written by Madonna’s brother-in-law Joe Henry called Stop, with Madonna and Mirwais completely changing the sound but keeping the song’s defiant lyrical message
  • In 2014, Madonna guested at Miley Cyrus’ MTV Unplugged show where they performed a mash up Don’t Tell Me and We Can’t Stop
  • The video was directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino who has also directed several Madonna videos including the controversial Justify My Love

D has been the hardest letter yet to choose a Madonna single from with seven contenders.  We very nearly went for Deeper and Deeper or Dear Jessie, but could’ve also had underrated Bond theme Die Another Day, Evita soundtrack fave Don’t cry for me Argentina, 80s classic Dress You Up and Ray of Light opener Drowned World/Substitute for Love.  Did we pick the right one? Tell us @entfocusmusic and what you’d pick for the letter D.
