Many happy returns to Alecia Moore aka P!nk today!
P!nk first got our attention when she released her sassy R&B album Can’t Take Me Home in 2000, but it was probably the follow up Missundaztood that really launched her to megastardom. This was the album she really wanted to make and it took the UK by storm going multiplatinum. She’s not stopped since, racking up 31 UK top 40 singles (3 of which were no.1s) and releasing seven studio albums including her current record Beautiful Trauma which topped the charts last October.
We are picking our top 5 P!nk singles in reverse order:
5. Get The Sweet Dreams Started
Get The Party Started is the song that introduced us to a rockier P!nk and reached no.2 on two separate weeks (held off first by George Harrison and then by Enrique Iglesias). It was the perfect introduction to her Missundaztood album with a video that was bright, funny and shows off P!nk’s skateboarding skills. We actually really liked the mash-up remix of the track with Eurythmics Sweet Dreams which includes a rap from Redman, so that’s the version we’ve opted for at no.5 in our countdown.
4. Nobody Knows
Nobody Knows is a beautiful, cinematic song that we think could well have been a great Bond theme. It only got to no.27 on UK singles chart back in 2006 but it was the last of four singles from the album I’m Not Dead, so we’ll just assume that everyone was buying the album instead (the album is 4 x platinum in the UK). P!nk co-wrote this track with Billy Mann who she also worked with on five of her seven albums including the singles Stupid Girl and God is a DJ. The video was shot mostly in a London hotel and directed by Jake Nava who also directed videos for a whole host of stars including Kelis’ Milkshake and Shakira’s She Wolf.
3. So What
One of three UK no.1 singles for P!nk following Lady Marmalade and Just Like A Pill, So What was the lead single from the Funhouse album and was written by P!nk, Max Martin and Shellback. It deals with her split from husband Carey Hart in a way only P!nk can – guess i just lost my husband i don’t know where he went. Guess I’ll just drink his money, not gonna pay his rent. Carey appears in the video and the pair did get back together and have since had two children together, so all’s well that ends well.
2. What About Us?
The first single from current album Beautiful Trauma, What About Us? starts as an emotional ballad but is soon getting us dancing by the chorus. The video tells a story of today’s political unrest through contemporary dance. P!nk wrote this track with Steve Mac and Johny McDaid who have both written with a host of stars including Ed Sheeran. The track reached no.3 on the UK singles chart and helped it’s parent album Beautiful Trauma become the biggest selling album by a solo female artist last year in the UK (the fifth biggest overall).
1. Just Give Me A Reason
P!nk teamed up with Nate Reuss from the group Fun. to record this powerful duet dealing with the ups and downs of relationships. It was co-written by the pair and Jeff Bhasker who also produced the track. His other credits include work with Kanye West, Jay-z, Alicia Keys and many more. The track peaked at No.2 on the UK singles chart back in 2013. It was denied the top spot by none other than PJ & Duncan and their 1994 hit Let’s Get Ready to Rhumble which shot straight to no.1 after Ant & Dec resurrected these characters for a surprise performance of the track on their Saturday Night Take Away Show.
