C2C: Florida Georgia Line spotlight

All week we’ve been bringing you spotlight features for the artists performing on the first day of C2C: Country To Country 2015 at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday 7th March 2015.

Already this week we’ve put the spotlight on rising artist Brandy Clark, chart-topping Lee Ann Womack and today it’s time to take a closer look at Saturday’s penultimate act, Florida Georgia Line. The bro-country duo will be lighting up The O2 Arena stage with their brand of hip-hop infused country.

Florida Georgia Line aka Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley met at Belmont University and following their graduation they decided to give themselves two years to succeed. They moved in together and hit the club circuit whilst holding down odd jobs to cover their bills.

“We’ve built this from the ground up,” says Brian Kelley, “Tyler and I are hands on with it all, from set list to email. Everything we do, we have put the FGL stamp on it. This is our love and our passion. We run it as a business…and a party.”

Their hard work paid off and they were discovered by Nickelback producer Joey Moi. Tyler and Brian recorded two EPs before they got major label attention thanks to their track Cruise.

In 2012 the duo enjoyed their breakthrough with the release of that track as a single which stayed at number 1 on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs Chart for 24 weeks, breaking a 69 year old record. The track sold over 8.5 million downloads making it the best-selling digital Country single of all time. Cruise was taken from the duo’s debut album Here’s To The Good Times which has sold over 2 million copies in the US along and over 20 million tracks worldwide.

Florida Georgia Line released their second studio album Anything Goes in 2014 and it hit the top of the Billboard 200 in the US, their first to do so, and gave the duo their second number one album on the US Country chart. In the UK the album has just been re-released as a Deluxe Edition ahead of the band’s appearance at C2C.

“The album title says it all: Anything Goes, no boundaries, no genre, no rules.” says Tyler Hubbard, “There’s a little something for everybody in there and if that helps shape where country is heading, or breaks down walls, then great. But it’s just what Florida Georgia Line has always done”.

Florida Georgia Line are now one of the biggest acts in country music, going from strength-to-strength with each release. Fans of the TV show Nashville will have spotted them during the current season too where they performed live. Read our review of Anything Goes.
