Andre Rieu makes box office history

Andre Rieu has broken his own record from last year by taking more than £1.4 million at the UK and Ireland cinema box office to become the highest grossing music concert of all time.

The Classical star’s 2016 Maastricht Concert screened at 544 cinema locations across the UK and Ireland this weekend and was attended by close to 100,000 people, grossing £1,408,251 (source: Rentrak). This surpasses last year’s Maastricht cinema broadcast, which was the first music concert to take over £1m at the UK box office on a single day beating cinema events by One Direction, Ed Sheeran and Take That.

The concert also screened at 266 further cinemas across Europe including in The Netherlands, Belgium, Romania, Germany, Spain and Poland. In Denmark, the 2016 concert also became the country’s highest grossing event cinema release of all time.

Further screenings will take place this weekend in Australia and New Zealand, followed by Canada, Brazil, France and South Africa with further territories to be announced in due course.

Tickets have just gone on sale for André Rieu: Christmas with André, a brand new Christmas event which will be shown in over 500 UK and Irish cinemas on Saturday 19th November at 5pm.
