Angie Miller may not have won this year’s American Idol but she won us over from the very beginning.
We were Team Angie from the outset and we’re not going to lie; tears flowed when she left the competition in third place. The words ‘robbed’ and ‘scandal’ came to mind as we were certain she was going to take the crown.
As history has proven, yes Jennifer Hudson we’re looking at you, not winning can be more lucrative than actually winning. We’ve been having a think about what we want from Angie’s upcoming debut album and here’s our Top 10 things.
1. Lots of piano melodies. We admit we felt a bit sorry for Angie when the judges told her week after week to stay at the piano but there’s something about her voice and that piano that just go together. It’s like cookies and cream, wine and cheese, beer and curry…it just works.
2. A piano version of You Set Me Free. We LOVE the single version but we want a stripped back version as a bonus track. Please Angie, just for us!
3. Original songs. We don’t want any covers. None at all. Angie is too good to release an album with covers. She’s set the bar high with You Set Me Free but we have faith.
4. A surprising collaboration. Maybe she’ll do a Kelly Clarkson and duet with a fellow contestant (we still love Kelly’s track with Tamyra Grey). We’d be more interested though in a duet with American Idol judge Keith Urban. Now that could be amazing.
5. A little bit of rock edge. There’s something Kelly Clarkson/Amy Lee about Angie’s vocal abilities so we’d like her to explore the rockier side of that. As she proved on her cover of Bring Me To Life she’s go the vocal chops to carry it off.
6. A real power ballad. We give Angie permission to step out from behind the piano for this one. She has such a great vocal range that we’d love to hear her really utilise her entire range on a classic power ballad. Think Celine Dion classics and you’re along the right lines.
7. Angie to just be allowed to be herself. We have our fingers crossed her label don’t try to force her to follow current trends. We love Angie the way she is and there’s something so special and different about her sound. We hope she’s allowed to blossom on her own terms.
8. Variety. As Delta Goodrem has proven being behind a piano doesn’t mean you have to limit your sound. We want a variety of styles and tempos.
9. An amazing first single. Yeah we know it’s a lot of pressure but we want to hear Angie’s first single proper (we know You Set Me Free was already released as a single) to give us the same shivers, goosebumps and emotion as that iconic performance of You Set Me Free did.
10. More than 10 tracks but fewer than 15. 10 track albums are not ok in our books. Never have been, never will be. Having said that more than 15 tracks usually results in too much filler. We reckon around 12 perfectly formed tracks would be perfect.
