Interview: MK talks about his new single Back & Forth

Detroit DJ, MK releases his new single Back & Forth alongside Becky Hill and Jonas Blue. The track has entered the Top 20 and is the follow up to his Platinum selling Top 10 hit, 17.

Previously, MK remixed Storm Queen, Look Right Through, which went to No.1 in the UK and he has also officially remixed the likes of Lana Del Ray, Sam Smith, Duke Dumont, Rudimental and more.

The American DJ and producer talks to me about his new single Back & Forth with Jonas Blue and Becky Hill and upcoming UK events.

Hi, how are you today?

I am really good, getting ready to jump on a plane again.

Where does this q&a find you?

I am in LA right now but getting ready to finish off The Fallback Tour with Camelphat and Will Clarke. Going to Orlando, Detroit and NY this week.

Can you tell our readers how you first got into music?

Well I lived in Detroit and it seemed like a great thing to do since I was surrounded by all the amazing talents of the original Detroit Techno Scene, also I loved music and it was never a bad way to meet girls too.

Detroit’s music scene is world famous, does this make it harder or easier for musicians and producers to try and make it big?

It might actually be easier today with all the social media. Everyone is so much easier to find and reach if you want to break into it and really have the drive and talent, the contacts are right there on the internet, that does not mean everyone will respond, but you keep trying and trying. Persistence is usually a winner.

You have a new single Back&Forth, can you tell us how it came to be and what it’s about?

Sure, Becky Hill and I have worked together numerous times and Jonas Blue had wanted to do something together for a long time, I really like both of them, so the music went back & forth (haha) to all of us and we kept adding different things to it and played it to our teams when we felt it was ready and that is how we finished and then started doing remixes as well, both our own and from other friends as well.

Does the single have a similar feel to your previous tracks?

Yes, and no… I think the main version that is being played on the radio is probably a little more accessible than I normally put forward, I always try to mix the more poppy end with an underground edge for radio and I save the super underground more club friendly for my live shows.

What can you tell me about this collaboration?

I do a lot of collaboration especially because I don’t sing, I am more on the track side of the record and the final production, and yes i did collaborate on this single with
Becky Hill and Jonas Blue.

What do you look for in a collaboration?

It’s not a formula answer for me it always has to do with chemistry, vibe and of course music.

What are your plans for the rest of the year?

I am going to finish my dates with Camelphat and Will Clarke, then go to Australia and New Zealand and then swing back around to England where i will be doing the Warehouse Project and then a special show in Liverpool

Can UK fans expect to see you soon?

Yes, I will be back at the end of November for my Area 10 show at The Warehouse Project. Then Liverpool in Dec and London’s Printworks for NYE.
