Kelsea Ballerini opens up to Cosmopolitan.com about her journey to stardom

Kelsea Ballerini has opened up to Cosmopolitan.com about her journey to fame in a new ‘How I Made It’ video.

The Grammy nominated Country music star, who is gearing up to release her new album Unapologetically later this year, talks about a variety of topics in the video including adjusting to life as an award-winning star and being friends with her musical heroes.

Discussing her experiences with the music industry, Ballerini said, ā€œThe most frustrating, but also the coolest, part about the music industry is that thereā€™s no set way to make it happen. I grew up loving music, and I always loved singing. But I was from Knoxville, Tenn., and I didnā€™t know you could just choose to be a singer. Then I wrote a song when I was 12. And that, for me, was the moment where I was like, ā€˜I donā€™t know how to do this, but Iā€™m going to go and figure it out.ā€

Ballerini reveals that she faced a lot of rejection from an early age as she tried to get her music heard:

ā€œI started going to Nashville when I was 12 or 13. I would show up to meetings with my guitar, with 20 songs, ready to go. No one would take me seriously. Taylor [Swift] had just launched. I learned how to write songs by listening to Taylor. By listening to Shania, and Faith. I wrote songs that I thought sounded like the radio, but the reality was, they were already on the radio. No one wanted to hear what I had to say because it was already said. So I kind of had to go away and figure out, ā€˜What is it that YOU want to say? What do YOU want to be about? What do YOU want to stand for?ā€™ā€

During the video, Ballerini explains the moment that everything changed for her: ā€œThe biggest moment for me was getting my publishing deal. Cause that was kind of the first step into the real music industry ā€¦ And I was able to leave school and do it full time. So I wrote songs full-time for a year, and at the end of that year is when I got my record deal.ā€
