One artist who was a bit of a surprise when the C2C: Country to Country line-up was announced was Margo Price. The singer-songwriter is leading the way for women in the alt-Country genre, making music that’s far away from the mainstream and commercial sound of Country radio right now. Last year she released her critically acclaimed second album All American Made and after touring her a few times, Price took to the Main Stage at C2C following a show-stopping performance from Midland.
Looking every inch the Country star Price opened her set with Don’t Say It, the first track on her latest album. Sounding great, Price took the slow burn approach for her set and as she went through Do Right By Me and Tennessee Song, it was all a little too laidback for me after Midland. Things started to pick up with Learning to Lose, which marked the first appearance of Lukas Nelson during the set. The album version features Lukas’ father Willie but he more then stepped into the legendary stars shoes.
Elsewhere in the set she performed the blues-tinged Cocaine Cowboys, which springs into life during the beat-driven chorus, and the punchy Paper Cowboy, which was taken from her Weakness EP.
One of the highlights of the set was current single A Little Pain. That song has a more rounded feel that sounds great in an arena. Hurtin’ (On the Bottle) was another standout moment thanks to its catchy and memorable melody. For her closing number Price performed a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Proud Mary and it was the first time she really let loose. It was great to see but I wish she’d taken that approach to more of the set, as until that point it had all felt a little too reserved.
For those that weren’t familiar with Price, her C2C performance was a solid introduction. I felt that it took a little while to get going but by the time she left the stage, it seemed a shame she couldn’t play for longer as her slow build resulted in a lot of energy from Price and the audience by the end. It was great to see her in an arena but I do think Price is best experienced in a more intimate venue where you can really hear her lyrics and concentrate on her storytelling abilities.
