C2C: Country to Country 2018 – Brett Young Spotlight Stage live review

The love for Brett Young here in the UK is pretty evident. Ever since the singer-songwriter signed to Big Machine Records, fans have been desperate for him to tour over here. He finally made the journey in 2017 as support for Lady Antebellum on their You Look Good Tour and he impressed with a very short set. I’m surprised that he was on the Spotlight Stage this year, especially given that he was one of the breakout stars of the last year thanks to his triple whammy of hits – Sleep Without You, In Case You Didn’t Know and Like I Loved You.

Young took to the Spotlight Stage following Ballerini’s energetic performance for two acoustic tracks, both of which were very familiar to the audience. Before he even sung a note, Young was drowned out by screaming so when he launched into his first number 1 hit Sleep Without You, I could actually feel an air of hysteria.

Vocally Young sounds even better live than he does on record. He has the perfect combination of grit and soul, and he doesn’t really get the judos he deserves for his vocal prowess. Sleep Without You showcases the more melodic side of his vocals while In Case You Didn’t Know, which was his second track, packed in emotion and passion. At one point during that song, he almost growled the lyrics and it sounded amazing.

For part of In Case You Didn’t Know, Young let the audience sing the words and they knew every single one. You could feel the disappointment that our time with Young was coming to an end.

Quite honestly it’s baffling that Young was only on the Spotlight Stage. He is performing at one of the after show parties but after three Platinum number one hits, he really should have been on the Main Stage. Just getting two acoustic songs seemed almost cruel and I would have loved to see him do a longer set.
