On the latest episode of MacGyver, Mac went to investigate the death of a close friend from M.I.T.
The episode opened up as usual with Mac (Lucas Till) and Jack (George Eads) stuck in a sticky situation. This time they were trapped in a trash compactor and pointed out the Star Wars reference themselves. Before they were crushed to death, Mac was able to attach his swiss army knife to a metal pole to push out one of the rivets. It saved their lives but Jack was left with an injured arm.
Matty (Meredith Eaton) spoke to Mac over the incident and he explained what had happened. Matty wondered if Mac would be better suited with a different partner than Jack but he disagreed.
Mac left the meeting when he got an unexpected phone call. He was told that his old M.I.T. friend Frankie (Aly Michalka) had died in a fire. Matty gave permission for Mac to head to Boston to attend the memorial service. When he arrived he found Jack waiting for him as his driver.
During the memorial, Mac spoke with the guy who called him about Frankie. He explained that her’s wasn’t the first death. Frankie’s advisor had recently died in a car crash. Before leaving they spotted a guy taking covert pictures and tried to catch him. He got away but not before dropping his phone.
Mac decided to pay a visit to the lab where Frankie died. Investigating the scene he realised that the story of how the fire started was wrong. He identified parts of a spectrometer and found a detonator inside. He concluded that there must have been a bomb.
They had Riley (Tristin Mays) take a look at the phone and she discovered that the photos were being sent to an email address. Riley said she would get to work on pinpointing a location of the email but that it wouldn’t be easy.
After explaining to Jack how clever Frankie was, he told him about one of her DNA sequencing projects. Using his knowledge of Frankie he identified a plant outside from a label that showed a moebius strip. Under the plant he found a thumb drive containing her journal.
Riley identified a possible location for the email in the campus tombs. They went straight there and found a booby trapped door. Inside they chased a hooded figure and when Mac caught up he discovered it was Frankie. She was alive after all.
Frankie explained how she had faked her own death and they told her how they found her. She had the guy take photos at the funeral to try and work out who wanted her dead.
They got to work analysing a DNA sample but had to flee. Without a lab they had to improvise and Mac cobbled together a centrifuge out of shoelaces and cardboard. After resequencing the DNA they had Riley look for a match but she was unsuccessful. Instead Bozer (Justin Hires) used the data to sculpt a model of what the person’s head might look like.
When he was done, Frankie recognised him straight away as the guy who sponsored her research. They needed to get a proper sample from him to prove he was the killer. To make things more complicated the sample had to be his blood.
They confronted him and Jack punched him in the face. He came away with blood on his ring which they sent to Riley. She confirmed it was a match. Frankie was keen for Mac to stay.
At the end of the episode, Dalton wondered if Mac would be better off with other clever people like Frankie. Mac explained he wanted to stay with Jack and not be stuck doing lab work.

When the team intercepts a terror group’s message meant for Murdoc, Mac poses as the psychopath to save the intended target and find out why they want Murdoc to assassinate him.
