Lethal Weapon 1×14 The Murtaugh File preview

On the latest episode of Lethal Weapon, Riggs (Clayne Crawford) and Murtaugh (Damon Wayans) investigated a series of violent crimes targeting members of the same church.

The episode opened up with a man in a hotel who was cheating on his wife with a prostitute. After she left there was a knock on the door, he answered it and an unseen person grabbed him by the throat.

Riggs woke up on the floor of his trailer which was a complete state. He was totally hungover after getting blind drunk the night before. He was surprised to find a woman in his bed. He got called into work and left her there, forgetting to take half his stuff or even any trousers.

Riggs and Murtaugh arrived at the hotel from the start of the episode. The man was found dead with the word ‘Sinner’ carved into his back. Riggs found a wedding ring in the man’s suit and realised he was probably married.

After tracking his wife down she told them about having to get a restraining order against a man who had thrown a brick at their house, smashing a window. Riggs and Murtaugh went to speak to him at work but when they arrived he ran off.

They chased after him around a building site and he grabbed a nail gun. He fired one at Riggs and temporarily pinned him to a wall by his shirt. He confronted Roger next but Riggs, as usual without thinking, took a running dive at both of them. They fell out of the building and landed in a skip below. Roger was furious because he knew it could have been handled better. Also there was no way Riggs knew if there was anything to save them below.

Later, the van of the killer was tracked down. Inside was the word ‘Sinner’ again, scrawled in blood. Near the van it looked like someone had recently been digging. They disturbed the soil and found a girl who had been buried alive. Fortunately they were just in time and she survived.

That evening at the Murtaugh household, Riggs crashed their dinner again. He got really drunk so Trish (Keesha Sharp) decided it best he stay on their couch. As Roger placed a sheet down and tucked him in, Riggs explained that he felt he had cheated on Miranda. He had recovered a few scraps of memories of the night before and realised he slept with the woman in his trailer.

The discovered a link between the woman who was buried alive and the murdered guy. It turns out that they attended the same church. They worked out that they were killed the same way they had killed others. Riggs and Murtaugh paid a visit to the church.

There they spoke to the priest who admitted he had spoken to both the woman and the dead guy. Riggs and Murtaugh had a look around and sat in the confessional booth. Murtaugh took the opportunity to say some nice things about Riggs. However he didn’t hear any of it because he had found a hidden mic and was tracking it to its source.

It led to the basement where the maintenance man had an office. Inside, Riggs found some kind of shrine that the man had built to church members who had done wrong. He had been listening in to their confessions.

Miranda’s father paid a visit to Riggs. He was upset that Riggs had missed a memorial service to mark the anniversary of her death. Riggs tried to explain he was having a rough time. The father-in-law replied that Riggs could get as drunk as he liked but that he wasn’t allowed to blame Miranda for it.

Looking into the maintenance man they discovered that his father had beaten his mother to death. His next target was the priest who had forgiven his father. He kidnapped the priest, tied him up and beat him. Fortunately Riggs and Murtaugh were on the scene pretty quickly and saved him.

Riggs pursued the maintenance man to the roof but he wasn’t able to help him. He decided he would rather die than be taken in. Riggs tried to grab him but the man jumped, taking Riggs over the edge with him. Riggs was able to grab a railing and Murtaugh arrived to try and pull him up. The railing started to break so Riggs told Murtaugh to let him go. He refused so Riggs punched him in the face. Eventually the pair of them ended up falling. Fortunately their fall was mostly broken by a tree below.

Riggs paid a visit to Miranda’s father and bought him a drink while opting for a non-alcoholic one himself. He explained that he was beginning to forget small things about Miranda. He said he didn’t want to see her father any more who replied that Riggs was part of their family. Riggs just wanted to be left alone.

Elsewhere in the episode, Roger was raiding the fridge to make a late night snack. He was surprised when a girl he didn’t know walked in on him. She seemed confident and spoke to him before RJ wandered in with her missing belt.

The girl was called Feather and was RJ’s new girlfriend. He later announced he wanted to travel the world with her instead of going to college. He had some plan to become a farmer and Trish and Roger weren’t overly happy.

They decided it was probably a phase and to let him learn the hard way. RJ had a chat with a drunk Riggs who told him to hang on to her if he loved her. Later, Feather split up with RJ and moved on without him.

At the end of the episode, Riggs went to give Murtaugh a bottle of whiskey as a thanks for saving him. It looks like he’s going to make an effort to stay sober.
