Despite having a rocky and uneven first season, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow has been getting stronger and stronger. An excellent second season set high expectations for the third season and I’m pleased to say the series didn’t disappoint. Originally criticised for having too many characters and lacking a cohesive storyline, the show sorted that out in season two paving the way for a very strong third season. The superhero team-up drama is one of the lighter of the current crop of DC shows, going for an engaging romp feel rather than a serious drama and it works!
The end of season two saw the Legends mess with time, changing a variety of timelines and historical events in the process. The Time Bureau forbids the team to interfere with history, asking that it be left to them but of course Captain Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) and her team can’t help themselves. As they jump around in time, former captain Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and his colleagues Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) and Gary Green (Adam Tsekhman) are tasked with keeping taps on the Legends and making sure they behave.
The big bad for season 3 is a demon named Mallus that has links to Damien Darkh (Neal McDonough) and his daughter Nora (Courtney Ford). Sara guides her team to fix the anachronisms they have created and secure a series of totems that will help them overcome Mallus. The way the storyline plays out is quite surprising and Damien isn’t just a two-dimensional bad guy for once. There’s more nuance and there are some uneasy alliances that have to be made in order to overcome the threat of Mallus. There’s also a giant teddy called Beebo but I really don’t want to spoil that random yet delightful surprise.
As has become the norm for every season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, there are changes to the team. Two original main characters depart the Waverider while hacktivist Zari (Tala Ashe) becomes the newest member of the team. Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) returns to the fold after leaving to return to Zambesi and John Constantine (Matt Ryan) pops up on a handful of occasions to help the team (he’ll be a full-time member when season 4 begins). There’s also the arrival of Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale), who crosses over from The Flash to join the series for several episodes.
Extras on the Blu-ray release include all four episodes of the Crisis on Earth-X crossover, four featurettes, a selection of unaired scenes and a gag reel.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow never loses sight of the entertainment factor and it serves up more consistent stories than some of its sister shows. Of course, it does benefit from a shorter episode count but the show has an energy that is very different from the other shows on The CW. The ever-changing Waverider members keeps the show fresh and as long as Caity Lotz is at the helm as Sara Lance, the show could continue changing and run for a while yet. Season 3 is a whole lot of fun that doesn’t take itself too seriously and provides plenty of entertainment.
