Homeland 7×06 Species Jump preview

On the latest episode of Homeland, Carrie (Claire Danes) put a plan into action.

If you want to avoid spoilers for Homeland season 7, we suggest you stop reading now. If you don’t mind then please keep reading.

The episode opened up with Saul (Mandy Patinkin) arriving at the FBI building in Virginia. Following the chaos of the assault on the Elkins compound, where 16 adults and 3 kids lost their lives, the community were angry. Saul looked nervous in the back of his vehicle as he was transported through the crowds of angry protestors.

Saul spoke to Brett O’Keefe (Jake Weber) about what had happened and held him responsible. O’Keefe said he no longer held any real power and it wasn’t his work that spread fake news about J.J. Saul wondered if someone else was involved such as the Russians. Before investigating further he was recalled back to the White House by Wellington (Linus Roache).

President Keane (Elizabeth Marvel) was briefed about the situation in Virginia. Saul gave his theory that the Russians might be behind the fake news and cited information warfare. The President was more concerned with fixing the current rioting problems.

Keane and Wellington met about a memorial service that was to take place for the victims in Virginia. Keane wanted to know why the five FBI Agents that were killed weren’t mentioned. She proposed a plan for the wives of the FBI Agents to attend the memorial as she felt it would help keep things calm and bring the country back together.

Keane paid a visit to Jackie Goodman, the wife of the agent who was held hostage and executed when the fake news hit. Later, Keane and Wellington watched the memorial coverage live on TV. The widows did attend and initially faced verbal abuse. They persevered and Mrs. Atkins got up and invited them to sit with her. Keane later addressed the Nation about the memorial.

Meanwhile, Saul took a plane to visit former SVR operative, Ivan Krupin (Mark Ivanir), who we last saw at the end of season five. Krupin is now living in the US under witness protection with a woman named Kira. Saul and Krupin took a walk and discussed fake news that Russia had used against the Ukraine. Saul proposed they had done the same in Virginia but Krupin said it was too dangerous and too soon after their election meddling. Saul later arranged surveillance on Krupin and Kira.

Meanwhile, Carrie paid a visit to an old friend named Anson (James D’Arcy). She explained that she was putting a team together to find out what happened to General McClendon. Later Carrie held a meeting with Anson, Max (Maury Sterling), Dante (Morgan Spector) and a couple of others. The plan was to go after Simone Martin (Sandrine Holt) to see what she knew. They decided to confront her later that night at her office.

Carrie and her team set up surveillance at Martin’s office and waited for the building to be clear. To keep her there, they had disabled her car ignition and Max intercepted her calls to her breakdown service and told her to wait for them. When she was back inside the building they cut the power and Anson’s team stormed in.

While Anson roughed her up a bug was placed in the lining of her handbag. Anson had her admit the money was payment for the murder of General McClendon. He told her that he wanted her to get him $100,000. They left and waited to see what she would do next in the hope she’d run to Wellington.

Martin did leave and went to a nearby bar. While she was outside they realised the bug in her bag wasn’t transmitting. One of the team followed her to the bar but she went to the women’s bathroom. Carrie was rushed in with a second bug to try and place it in Martin’s bag. She got to the bathroom and slipped the bug into her bag. Max intercepted a call that Martin made to Wellington where they agreed to meet at his place.

Max continued to monitor Martin and discovered she ordered an Uber to Wellington’s. The team followed the cab to make sure that’s where it went. This time the bug was working. The observed her going into Wellington’s and he was already there to meet her. They tried to listen into the bug but realised that it had been left in the Uber.

Carrie suggested going after the Uber but there was no way to get the bug back to Martin without raising suspicions. Carrie had no choice but for them to pull out. She went to meet with Max to view what happened via their hidden cameras. Martin mentioned nothing about being assaulted or the money. Instead they drank wine and had sex. Maybe Wellington had nothing to do with the hit on McClendon after all.
