Getting Go, the Go Doc Project DVD review

Doc (Tanner Cohen) comes up with a novel way to get closer to his go-go boy crush Go (Matthew Camp) by approaching him with the idea of making a documentary about him. The college student follows Go across New York and gets an insight into every aspect of his life as he films every moment. As the filming progresses, Doc finds himself getting closer to Go than he ever imagined but soon learns that getting what you want isn’t always what you thought it would be.

Getting Go is the directorial debut of Cory Krueckeberg, one of the writers on gay indie hit Were The World Mine. The film reunites him with Were The World Mine star Tanner Cohen and is a much more engaging feature than you’d first expect. The film opens with Doc masturbating over pictures of Go and honestly we thought we were going to be in for a soft-porn type of movie experience.

Colour us surprised that Getting Go actually turned out to be a rather touching, emotive and entertaining watch. Anyone that has visited a go-go bar in the US has likely felt the way that Doc does at the beginning of the movie. Watching the bronzed muscled Adonis’ working their way around poles and railings in only their underwear isn’t something you forget easily. What’s interesting with Getting Go is Doc’s determination to get close to Go without, at first anyway, accepting that he’s just one in a long-line of admirers thinking they have a chance with the hunk.

Despite having no clue as to what he’s trying to achieve when he first approaches go, Doc actually pulls it together admirably and he manages to form a real friendship with Go. Things take a turn for the surprising when the two take their relationship past the realms of friendship and that’s where things get really interesting. Doc has spent so much time imagining what it would be like to get intimate with Go and when it happens the aftermath unfolds in a way he never expected.

At the centre of the movie is a strong performance by Tanner Cohen. We loved him in Were The World Mine and he’s got an adorable face that makes him incredibly endearing to watch. He’s got many layers as an actor too and he plays Doc’s naivety impressively. Just as impressive is Matthew Camp as Go who used to be a go-go dancer. This is his first foray into film and he’s really good as Go. His performance feels natural and his chemistry with Cohen builds nicely. They bounce off one another and in the film’s middle section they have some great scenes together.

Cory Krueckeberg really impresses with his directorial debut. We knew from Were The World Mine that he’s a good writer, but as a director he brings this film to life fantastically. Despite a low budget, the film never feels cheap and he gets the best out of his shots and his actors. We’re excited to see what he does next.

Getting Go is a film that will genuinely surprise you. It gives a realistic insight into the life of a go-go dancer as well as exploring the viewpoint of a fan who wants to be close to his object of lust. With realistic performances and some surprising twists, the film is one we heartily recommend and it’ll make you think twice next time you look at a go-go dancer as a hunk of meet rather than a person.
