Wurdy review

These days when a game is described as social you probably instantly think it means you need to link it with your Facebook account. Wurdy, from SockMonkey Studios and Marvelous Games, is a proper old school social game that requires you to sit in the same room as friends and interact with them too.

Wurdy is a word-guessing game for iOS that just requires one or more willing friends in order to play. The game itself is incredibly simple and it’s very similar to the popular boardgame Articulate. The person in play holds the iPhone/iPad and chooses a category such as General, Animals, Kids, Science and Celebrities. They then have 60 seconds to describe as many words as they can while the other players try and guess.

To keep things interesting the person describing isn’t allowed to rhyme, mime or spell out words. As you describe you need to tap the green Next button for a correct guess or the red Pass button to skip or for a rule break. Correct guesses award you with points which are totalled up into your final score when your time is up. Once you’re done play can move onto the next player and the game tracks how many players there are and how many rounds you play.

When you join the game it takes a photo of you for your profile. While playing it also takes a video of your attempt to describe the words that it throws at you. This is a really neat idea and it can be quite hilarious to watch back the faces you pull while trying to describe certain things. Hearing the other players guessing can also be a lot of fun.

After your time is up you can rewatch the video it took and then upload and share via social media if you so wish. Most of the time you probably won’t bother but it’s a nice feature to have and a great way to remember a particularly funny round.

To keep the game fresh you can purchase extra category packs. The developers are also promising to keep releasing new categories in the future.

Wurdy is a cracking game to play with friends almost anywhere and is sure to be popular at family gatherings too. It can be enjoyed by all ages but it’s definitely most fun when played down the pub. If you enjoy party games like charades then you should give it a try.

Wurdy is available now via the iTunes App Store for £0.69.
