Super Animal Royale review

Ah, fluffy and brutal. Two things that go together like peanut butter and shoe polish. Yet, Super Animal Royale pairs them together like a fine wine.

Super Animal Royale plays through matchmaking online. You can play in a solo mode, duos, or the promised in time ‘squads’, depending on the type of dynamic you wish to go to war in. Right now in early development, the servers are fast and plucky, getting you into the absurd action straight away. The amount of players that appear to be on board with the adorable bloodfest are far and wide, leaving you with plenty of potential opportunities to stake your claim as champion of the animal kingdom.

Each match starts with an airdrop over lush surroundings. Scrambling for a weapon, even though you’re handed a default sword, is priority one. Then the fun begins. Very much a situation of “you can run but you can’t hide”, Super Animal Royale will undoubtedly get you growling at the monitor as you begin to hunt down the cutest set of enemies in any death match situation ever..

Speaking of how cute everything is, Super Animal Royale’s art style is something out of a children’s Saturday morning cartoon with its bright colours and stupidly adorable assets. Playing as an assortment of animals — such as a fox, sloth or panda — it’s hard to not want to cuddle all the deathy things around you.

There’s great ideas in the mix too — poison gas to keep you on your paws, and a ridiculously cool arsenal of weapons to pick up and choose from. You’ll be spoilt for choice when trying to figure out how to whack the nearest fuzzball.

Super Animal Royale really finds the fun and time to laugh with itself in every way possible. There’s something to be said about a game that commits to its humour in the way that this safari death fest does. It’s hilarious and will bring a big smile to your face, but doesn’t cut corners with the actual gameplay and how very well-tuned it all is.

Unfortunately if you’re not into online multiplayer, this one might pose a problem with its cuteness dazzling you from afar. As with any online game, jumping into the action usually is a rude awakening: while you’re scrambling to find your footing and figure out exactly how to swing that sword as someone rushes you; they’ll take you out as an easy noob kill faster than you can say ‘Oh dea–‘ at your monitor. Good thing is–despite them being brutal in the arena, the community for Super Animal Royale is in its youthful stage and, on the whole, very helpful and delightful to play with.

If you’re a fan of online multiplayer games, all things fluffy and just looking for a good time destroying those around you in an arena, Super Animal Royale will fit your pick nicely. Controller/keyboard throwers beware, but on the whole this one will make you feel pretty good playing it even if you’re not top of the pecking order.
