Ridiculous Triathlon is the latest mobile game from Spanish indie studio, Cremagames. The game is their take on an endless runner. We’ve been checking it out to see if they have managed to bring new ideas to the genre.
After the success of games such as Canabalt and Temple Run the endless runner genre has remained a popular choice for mobile games. Simple controls and quick gameplay are a perfect fit for mobile devices.
Triathlon is a sporting event where participants take part in a race over three disciplines – swimming, cycling and running. The sport used to be reserved for only elite athletes but it has increased in popularity in recent years with a much wider range of abilities.
As you may have guessed from the name, Ridiculous Triathlon isn’t a serious simulation of the sport. It does however take its inspiration from the sport but puts a focus on fun. The events take part in three different cities around the world – Barcelona, London and Tokyo. Instead of controlling a single character you control a team of three unusual characters who must work together.
The running sections are the most fun and also rather stressful as they you have you controlling all three characters at once. You need to watch the track ahead and then swipe each character into a safe lane. Putting two or more in the same lane causes them to stack so you need to ensure they will fit under height gates.
Cycling portions of the game put all characters onto the same bike with the controls switching to a tilt based method in order to avoid all the obstacles. You also need to take the length of your bike into consideration which can be tricky when timing jumps.
Finally swimming makes use of swipe controls once more. Here the characters combine to make a single athlete and you need to move left and right as well as up and down to dodge the hazards.
Like most free-to-play titles Ridiculous Triathlon makes use of optional in-app purchases. Here you can buy coins or diamonds. Coins are used to customise your characters and even their bike. They can also be spent on fun power-ups to make things a little easier. Diamonds are used as continues when you hit an obstacle and the more you continue in a single try the more diamonds are needed. You can also buy ‘super-powers’ which are one time purchases to make the game a little easier with things such as one free continue each attempt.
Ridiculous Triathlon is a decent endless runner that will please fans of the genre. The different disciplines add a nice variety to the game and the running sections are wonderfully challenging due to the multiple characters. Players who don’t enjoy these styles of games will probably find little to tempt them here.
